Hi guys,  Kris from Custom Fitness here, your Amarillo personal trainer. Today we’re going to be talking about living your vision. This is going to be the first part in a two part series, so be on the lookout for part two coming soon. And if you have any questions about today’s blog, then please give us a call at (806)-322-3188

So today I went to the optometrist with my family to see how great they can see and how poorly I’ve always been able to see. I’ve had to wear glasses since about the third grade, so it’s always fun to take the family to come look through the little lenses and have them see the way that I do. When doing that they find out that their vision is much better than they thought it was and they really can’t quite believe how I live when I don’t have my contacts in, and they start to understand that I really can’t see. I can’t see too far in front of me and I really can’t make things out in the way that I should be able to.

During this visit it really got me thinking about how a lot of people like to set these goals. They come in and we ask what the top three things are that we can help them with. What we usually hear are things like “I want to lose weight.”, “I want to eat better.”, “I need some muscle gain.”,  or “ I just want to feel better”. Through this they are setting goals for themselves, but really it’s one piece of the puzzle and they’re lacking that total vision.

So, what we really need to think about is kind of asking ourselves “Why are we setting these goals?” And most of the time it’s popular demand, right? People teach us that we should lose weight, so we go in and think that losing weight it the answer. If we can just lose some weight it’s going to make us feel so much better, it’s going to put so many things into perspective, and everything is going to come together. The problem with that is that a lot of times people- let’s take a friend of mine for example.

I have a friend who has been having headaches, gut distress, hasn’t been sleeping well, hasn’t been thinking well, and feels like they might be a little bit overweight but not quite so sure. So they feel like if they just lost weight, then all of these problems are going to be fixed. However, the vision that they have isn’t matching up with the goal that they have created.

So, really when it comes down to it, the goals aren’t the starting point, but instead the vision is the starting point. What we want to do is that we want to focus on the destination of where we ultimately want to be, rather than the pieces that it’s going to take to get to that destination.

So, a lot of times, let’s take a trip for example, you know where you want to go, let’s say that place is Cancun. You pack your bags, you’re going to book your flights, get a hotel, get a rental car, find out what restaurants you want to eat at, and everything else that goes into planning a trip. But if instead of thinking that you’re going on this trip, and rather you think that you’re going to pack your bags and get a hotel etc…, then where? Where is the destination? The pieces are all there, but the total vision isn’t. The total vision would be getting to the destination and actually using those pieces to build that trip so that once you get to that destination everything will make sense.

Whenever people are looking to lose fat, a lot of times the destination is that they want a different body shape. Or maybe they want to get to supposedly “lose weight”. It’s all kind of the same thing, they want people to perceive them differently. For people whose goals are to eat healthier, a lot of the time the destination may be for less illness, or for lifelong health, or for longevity of life.

So there is a lot of different things in there that go into play, and again, those goals are just little bits and pieces along that journey to your destination. In order to set goals you have to create this vision, you need your destination so that you know where you’re going.

So i’m going to end part one here. In part two we’re going to be talking about ways that you can apply all of this to your life. I know that right now you may not be sure where to even begin, but by the end of part two you’ll be ready to take all of these goals and turn them into steps that will take you to your ultimate vision. So stay tuned for part two, because I am going to talk about how I applied this to my own life.
