If you’ve been watching our videos or reading our blogs for long, you know that our family, my family, is full of food allergies, something I never really saw coming, but I’ve got two beautiful kids and a wonderful husband, and between all of us, we have about nine different food allergies.
Thank the Lord that there’s not more than that because I might go insane, but I have one child who has had allergies since she was about two years old that we know of, and she’s grown up with this. Through the years she has understood that as hard as it is, she can’t have nuts, and she can’t have dairy, and she can’t have gluten, and for her it gets even more severe. There’s some really odd ones in there that most people don’t have an issue with, and of course, we get those.
So it’s hard on a kid, right? As a child who is my Type A personality and really wants to please everybody … She’s a big people pleaser … Wants to be sure that she does everything correctly. I mean, this is my child that if I tell them they have to clean up the closet in the morning when they wake up, she will stay up an hour late after I tuck her in to go and clean up the closet for me just so that in the morning everything can start on the right foot.
That’s her personality so why then is it that a few weeks ago I walk out into our garage … We got a freezer out there … With all these food allergies I keep extra desserts like cupcakes and things like that in case we’re invited to birthday parties and stuff, and I can grab one and go. Why is it that I walk out there and she has not only a cupcake, but also a deal of ice cream.
We had a party at our house not too long before that that we had some other family members there that aren’t allergic to dairy so it was a dairy based ice cream that she’s sitting there holding. She’s looking at them like, “Which one am I going to eat?” And she’s got this shuffle going on, and I snuck out there so she didn’t really see me. She puts both of them in one hand, and then she starts to put her finger into the ice cream.
She’s determined to eat this stuff. She knows that when she eats it, she’s going to have tummy aches. She’s going to have headaches, she’s going to be lethargic, and she’s not going to feel good for a few days. There’s a lot that goes along with that, but she was still willing to eat it, and she knew what she was doing. She’s old enough now to be able to read and know exactly what’s happening.
In my mind, of course, as a mom, I’m stepping out there saying, “What are you doing? Why would you do this?” But later it came to me that this is really our most basic desire.
Now for human bodies our most basic desire is energy, and how we get that energy can vary. If we are sleeping well, eating well, being properly active, staying away from electronics outside of a minimal time during the day, our energy levels can be pretty great, but so many people come to me and they are exhausted all the time. And others tell me … I’ll ask about how their fatigue feels during the day, how their energy feels, and they will tell me that it’s all right, but you can tell that they’re exhausted. Over a few weeks they’re like, “I didn’t even know that I was living in exhaustion because it was just where I was it. It was just my normal.”
Just like my lovely darling pulling out something that she knew better, she wanted that freedom to be able to eat it, but a lot of it was just she needed something different. Our bodies are craving something different, and that basic desire, needing energy, comes in and attacks.
That’s where maybe you’ve been doing a hard and fast diet of some sort, and you’ve taken out all sugars. And all of a sudden one day you just fall off the wagon, and you eat everything in sight, or maybe instead of the healthy fats you’ve gone crazy with some unhealthy fats. Some people even go crazy with the healthy fats, and to a point that’s okay, but there is a point where we have to stop too.
So i’m going to end part one here. In part two we’re going to be talking more about nutrition and control.
