Hi guys, Kris from Custom Fitness here, your Amarillo personal trainer. Today we’re going to be talking about “making it happen”. If you have any questions about today’s blog, then please give us a call at (806)-322-3188
So what is “making it happen”? What does that even mean? A lot of the time we have people come to us and say that that hardest part of reaching their goals is actually doing it. It’s hard to be accountable to what you’re doing.
So how do you “make it happen”? Well, it’s really just too easy to not work towards your goals. It’s too easy to stay in your comfort zone and not progress forward. You could be trying to reach a goal with weight loss, muscle gain, or even just trying to be consistent with any good changes in your health. There are so many different types of goals. A lot of the time it seems like we try and cookie cutter those goals and put it all into one pile. However, everyone has their own unique goals.
A lot of people that we work with, really when it comes down to it, just want consistency over time because they know that the truth is, they are going to reach whatever physical goals that they have by doing something healthy, consistently over time. So if they can do that, they know that they’ll get there. The problem is that you can know all that you want to know, but if you don’t take action on it, it will never happen. If education is all that it took, google would have fixed all of our problems a long time ago. So instead, what you have to do is work towards finding that consistency.
Now, remember that as you take this on, you first have to keep in mind that this is not about perfection. This is about being 1% better everyday. If you can do something just a little bit better each day, then you are still making progress. You haven’t quit, you haven’t stopped, instead you just continue to keep moving forward. No one was ever meant to breeze through goal changes. You have to make sure that you are taking those tiny steps so that they can be maintained over time.
So, how do you get started?
The first step is planning ahead. It could be a day ahead or a year ahead, you just have to start planning ahead. You need you plan of action so that you know what you need to do.
Step two is scheduling. You are going to take that nifty new plan that you have, and now you are going to put the steps into your calendar as appointments. You can set those appointments just for yourself, or you can have someone that you are accountable to that will be involved. You just want to be sure that you know that what you are putting on your schedule is important enough to be there. If you are not important enough to yourself to put that on your schedule, then we have a whole different issue to deal with there. But for now, just think about how you are doing this because you need to take that time for yourself. There is not skipping this appointment. You are doing this not only for your mental health, but also your physical and emotional health.
And step three is elaborating on what we were talking about in step two; you need to find that accountability partner. Maybe it will be in working with an Amarillo personal trainer, like one of us. Maybe it’s a friend, or someone that is working towards the same goals that you are. Find someone that will be encouraging to you and remind you (not nag you) about why this goal is important to you. Constant accountability is crucial to success rates. That accountability could come from them doing the work with you, or it could come from them just checking in and giving you a call. It all depends on what you need. Find someone that you can work with that is also responsible enough to keep themselves accountable enough to keep you accountable.
Step four is to reward yourself for reaching those milestones. Now, i’m not talking about going for the ice cream sundaes and cheesecake (even though those are nice on occasion), but if you are working towards healthy goals it’s good to give yourself healthy rewards. You could have time by yourself, time with a friend, a weekend trip, a movie night, a new pair of shoes, there are so many things that you can do. You can reward yourself in a healthy way when you reach those milestones. Just be sure that those are set milestones. When it comes to weight loss, people will reward themselves by setting weight goals for themselves. And it’s good to have set milestones so that they can be celebrated! You have to take the time to recognise the changes that you have made and to be proud of yourself for them. Take the time to savor those successes and remember how far that you have come. Life was meant to be enjoyed to the fullest, so be sure to take the opportunity to add a little more joy to life when you can.
