Hi guys,  Kris from Custom Fitness here, your Amarillo personal trainer. Today we’re going to be talking about taming your sweet tooth. If you have any questions about today’s blog, then please give us a call at (806)-322-3188

So I was thinking over the weekend how hectic things get over this period of a few days at the end of our week. There just isn’t a structure or schedule to what you are doing. And during the weekends, all of the craziness around us tends to lead to overconsumption. It leads up to a time where we really aren’t paying as much attention to what we are eating or why we are eating it.

This is why today we are going to be talking about taming your sweet tooth. This tends to be something that people really struggle with over the weekend. You may do great all week long while you are at work, but over the weekend things start to change.

So if you have an issue with overeating sweets, or really any food for that matter, then you really need to figure out if this is a mental issue or a physical issue. So is it something in your mind that is telling you that you need this food, or is this your body actually communicating to you that it’s hungry. Sometimes that can be a little hard to figure out.

When we talk about things like stress, boredom, habit, or legitimate cravings this can all be factors. And it is okay to crave sweet things every now and then. But if those cravings are overtaking you and causing you to work away from your goals, then that really doesn’t benefit you in the long run. All this does is lead you into more discouragement and frustration then it does happiness.

Now I know that the momentary instance of tasting those sweets are great, but if it leads you away from your goals then you are going to spend the next few days feeling guilty about it, then it really wasn’t worth it.

So there are a few different ways that you can go about fixing this issue. And typically whenever people are snacking on sweets all of the time I try my best to give them some options of what they can do.

So first off is to freeze it. Take whatever it is that you are snacking on and freeze it. So with this you won’t be as likely to think about whatever this snack is because it’s in the freezer, not at eye level with you in your pantry. And also, if it is something like chocolate or a popsicle, you are going to have to work on eating that frozen thing for a while in order to get some satisfaction from it. Doing this will make you less likely to be tempted and have this snack as often.

So the second option if you don’t want to throw your snacks in the freezer, is to get it out of sight and out of mind. Don’t put it at the eye level shelf of your pantry, don’t keep it in your favorite cabinet–put it in a cabinet that you don’t typically go to. Put it out of sight, hide it in the back, put some other stuff in front of it. Do whatever it takes to make sure it isn’t at the top of you mind all of the time. This way it will be more of a have to moment whenever you start thinking about it. And if you are really thinking about it, then you can go grab it. This way it won’t be sitting out and taunting you all day long. Because we all know that the rule of thumb is that if it’s there, then you’re eventually going to eat it. So obviously, if you really want to cut it out, then don’t put it into the house in the first place. But for a lot of people, their cravings take them out of the house. So keep that in mind whenever you go out.

And now if you have ruled out all of the emotional reasons for wanting sweets and just realized that you have a craving for some sweets after dinner, then instead make a better choice with you sweets. Instead of doing regular pudding, make avocado pudding. Instead of doing brownies, do black bean brownies. You can even make your own jello! There are so many different options and you can find them all online. You can get the recipes and make them yourself, and they can really be simple. A lot of these things only take a few ingredients, and they aren’t much more complicated to make than the other stuff. And this is stuff that your whole family can enjoy. And a lot of these recipes make smaller servings, so this way you aren’t over consuming.

So the next time that you feel those cravings, remember to freeze it, to keep it out of sight and out of mind, or to make a healthier option. And know that breaking habits is hard. It is harder than we give it credit to. But making progress, even if it’s small steps, is the best thing you can do. You don’t need to go from A to Z overnight. Remember to be kind to yourself and to not fear the black bean brownies!
