Hi guys, Kris from Custom Fitness here, your Amarillo personal trainer. Today we’re going to be wrapping up the two part series on your brain VS science. Now be sure to read part one if you haven’t already at the link here: And as always, if you have any questions about today’s blog then please give us a call at (806)-322-3188
Last time we were talking about how we have to be intentional about our health. These days it’s way too easy to just go out and grab a hamburger, or go out and grab some junk food, or go to the store and get a Coke. It’s too easy to do that, so the brain says, “Okay, path of least resistance. Let’s do that, plus it makes me feel good.” So we get the short-term buzz, if you will, without the long-term health to go with it. And then one day the diagnosis comes in that you have an issue, or you wake up with these pains, is you can’t figure what they’re from. And you imagine that they must have come from the last few days, few weeks. But it turns out they’ve come from the last few decades of your life, where you’ve mistreated your body.
So health and wellness are a huge thing, and we have to understand that our brain will always take a different direction than what the facts are going to tell us, because the facts put a hard truth in our face. So ways that I’ve found to help people with some of these issues, there’s really four different ways that we start with. And number one is to take small steps. Don’t leap in. So find what’s going to work for you and take small steps towards a bigger goal, so that over time you can create consistency to reach that goal, but you haven’t jumped head-first into where you feel like a failure from day one. We want to feel successful, that’s the whole goal.
So step number two is to do things that make sense. So if you’ve found a new diet, or your friend’s doing something new, or you’ve found a new workout plan, look it over. Make sure that it makes sense. Not only hopefully in the science realm, as far as research and what’s actually going on, but also in the fact of does it make sense for your body, and does it make sense with the time that you have allotted to do it?
So if you have a meal plan that takes a ton of food prep and all these specialized situations to go with it, and you are a very busy mom of two or three kids that have sports every night, that’s not going to make a lot of sense for you. So we got to find the thing that makes sense in your life at this moment with who you are right now.
Number three is to keep a journal of successes. I highly recommend this, because as we try to change … Change is so hard. And if you keep a journal of successes, then on those great days you’re just getting to write them all down. And on those really hard days, you get to go back and look through at all the progress that you’ve made. Make sure that you see the need to continue, so that you can bind your determination, because I will tell you that your willpower will run out so fast. We get started on these things, and we think about willpower, and we get going and it’s great.
But then, all of a sudden, one day we wake up, it all falls apart, and we can’t figure out why. And it’s because you were using only willpower. Willpower has to be combined with determination. And that determination comes from our motivation, and that motivation is not always the results that we are getting, but rather the goal that we are seeking. So we have to continue moving forward is the goal, to create this consistency that gets you success.
So number four is finding support. Now that can be an accountability partner, it could be a family member that just really cheers you on, it could be a team of professionals, it could be a single individual. So whoever you need to support you, that’s what you want to find. Now if you have a bunch of friends right now, that every time that you try to make yourself healthier, they start to drag you back down and help you to sabotage yourself, they might not be the best people to hang around, but I understand that some of those people you can’t always get away from, right? You can’t really separate yourself from your sister or your brother.
Some people people you can kind of push off to the side a little bit and not see them as much, or control the situations that you see them in a little bit better. But basically, in finding support, maybe you’ll find some new people to support you. Maybe it’s new friends coming in. Maybe it’s a new professional to come in and support you. Whatever it may be, find that support, because on our own, we are useless. But together, we have so much power. And we have to be able to work together in order to get to where we need to be.
So those are just some tips on getting past this sabotage that we put ourselves in whenever the science is backing everything up. We know what we need to do. We know that we have to follow XYZ in order to get healthy and fit, but then the sabotage comes in and just breaks us down. So try those steps today, see how they go.
