Hi guys,  Kris from Custom Fitness here, your Amarillo personal trainer. Today we’re going to be talking about pain level. If you have any questions about today’s blog, then please give us a call at (806)-322-3188

So today we aren’t actually going to be talking physical pain, we are going to be talking more about mental and emotional pain.

There is a saying that says that “change will not come until the pain of staying the same outweighs the pain of change”, because we know how painful change can be. We as human beings don’t generally like change. Change is not something that we jump for joy over unless, of course, we can control it. If we are able to control it, then we have this different sensation of what change is and what change can be, whereas when it is an out of control change or something that doesn’t quite go the way that you want it to, it can be very painful.

So, once again let’s think on that: “change will not come until the pain of staying the same outweighs the pain of change”. This applies to personal life, your business, your family life, your spirituality, and all of it gets put into this bucket with same idea that where change might be necessary, it might not be something that you are ready to take hold of yet.

I have a story for you today that ties into this whole topic. It’s about a woman that I worked with a few years back. Her name is Sue, and she was happy and healthy and fit in her thirties. She was your typical thirty-ish person living a great life. She went to the gym and worked out, felt great, had kids and ran them all over the place, took care of things at home and at work, and she had just an overall happy and normal life.

Well, then she had some pretty life altering things happen to her that were not quite as positive as any person would like, and that led her into a state of depression. She was in a state of depression that led her to a hundred pound weight gain. And keep in mind that this wasn’t instantaneous, this was over a few years that this happened. She gained a hundred pounds, she became diabetic, she had high blood pressure, she had high cholesterol, she had just gotten to forty and wasn’t doing so good anymore.

In the beginning she just thought that this is what it meant to be forty. However, later on she started to realize that what was happening really wasn’t a matter of age, it was more about her environmental factors. It had to do with what was going on in her life and how things were happening.

At that point she wasn’t ready to change, she felt like she could handle it. She went to the gym, she tried every diet plan out there, and I know that a lot of you would agree that sometimes that leads to more frustration than good. However, part of that lies in the actual question of ‘are you ready to change?’ Are you mentally ready to accept what you are going to have to do in order to make those changes?

A lot of the time people will do some of the nutrition plan, or some of the exercise plan, but they won’t do it with their full heart. People won’t put their all in, and then they become frustrated when they don’t get the results that they think they should even though they didn’t put forth 100% effort. Now, it sounds kind of ridiculous when you read it, but that’s really what happens.

So, this sweet woman came in and asked for help. She finally had a moment in her life that was like a light switch flipped. She woke up one day and realized that she was done, that she needed help, and that it was time to change. So she came in and she worked with myself and my team. She was dedicated, she was motivated, she was really ready for that change. She was all in because dealing with that pain-dealing with that depression became unbearable.

This woman came in ready to get her life back, and in just eight months she had lost 75 pounds. She also lowered her A1C to pre-diabetic levels. Now, once you are considered diabetic, the doctors have a really hard time telling you that you’re not, but as you eat better and exercise often times the body will heal itself. And so along with lowering her A1C, she also lowered her blood pressure and cholesterol into healthy levels. They still lightly medicated her, but they cut her off of tons of medications.

In doing all of this, it really brought joy back to life, and it brought her back so that she could enjoy that joy in life. And yes, weight loss was a goal of hers, but really what she got was improved quality of life which led to being able to move better, to feel better, and that led to the weight loss.

Really a lot of the time when we’re looking in the mirror and what we’re seeing these areas that we need to improve on, really if we can improve the quality of our life, whether it be physically or emotionally, then we’ll be able to reach the goals that we’re wanting in the mirror but by first improving our quality of life.

So I’ll ask you again: what is your pain level today? Where are you at in the process of change? Is there something that needs to change? It is very easy for us to look in the mirror and always see one more little flaw, but we have to learn to accept and love ourselves as we are and then figure out if we are truly ready to change. Do you have the desire to become something better, or someone better? There is never going to be perfection, there is never going to be an end to this journey. The journey is about always being better, and we can always be a little bit better.
