Hi, I’m Kris Stokes with Custom Fitness Personal Training Studio.  I spend most of my days coaching people, and I LOVE it! I coach them through exercise, post rehab, pregnancy health, postpartum health, senior vitality, nutrition, mindset, and life in general.

My point is that I work closely with people in many walks of life and through some of life’s big struggles. In fact, I enjoy helping others in this way so much that way back in 2006 I opened my own business to continue doing just that and doing it to 100% of my abilities!

Here’s the thing though, people aren’t always ready to make the changes they need to in order to reach the goals they’ve set for themselves.

A frequent conversation that I have with clients is about how their goals and habits are on 2 parallel train tracks. If you run a train down both tracks as is, the 2 will never meet. But if you begin to shift one side or the other, eventually the tracks would mesh together – not good news for the trains, but for you, well that’s a much better story.

We as humans are determined to be in control. Just look back over the past few months to see what I mean. No matter what the current situation, we believe that if we just control this one factor that we will make everything right with the world.

The problem here is that we aren’t in control, not completely. – Sorry, didn’t mean to burst your bubble there. That isn’t to say that we don’t have areas that we can control – ie. Our daily choices, our daily activities, our mindset, etc.

So when my clients appear to have 2 parallel tracks, we then have to have 2 discussions:

  1.       Where is it that you truly want to be 12 months from now? Are your goals too lofty for the life you enjoy living?
  2.       What are you willing to change in order to get there?

No matter what, there will be a compromise eventually. Either the goal will change to meet the lifestyle or the lifestyle will change to meet the goal. The only other option is to stand still and do nothing, which humans have a very hard time doing.

This isn’t a frustration for me as their coach because I’ve been there. Yup, you heard that right. I’ve been right where they and probably you are! I’ve struggled with wanting to change, knowing I needed to change but not really being ready to take the leap.

In fact, knowing that I’ve been through that and what I’ve done to overcome it (we’re definitely talking more than once in my life) is what helps me be a better coach. I’m able to offer empathy, understanding, and many, many different plans of action to move my clients further along on their journey of better health, body, mind and spirit.

So, what if I told you that just because you aren’t ready to take the leap and make all the changes you’re probably going to need to in order to reach your goals, that it doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t start? Truthfully. I tell my kiddos this all the time, just because you’re not perfect at something shouldn’t keep you from trying.

Whether you’re a novice when it comes to the health and fitness realm or an expert, we could all use a reminder to let go of the “perfection idea” and just start. It really doesn’t matter what the goal is, it could be fat loss, muscle gain, better balance, optimal health, standing straight and tall or just finding a better way to eat. No matter the goal, we all start in the same place, square 1, and then we build from there.

You don’t have to be willing to do EVERYTHING tomorrow, just try to be better than you were today. Consider it an upgrade to your already amazing self and know that day by day, the small victories will add up and one day they will amount to GREAT things!
