Hi guys, Kris from Custom Fitness here, your personal trainer in Amarillo! Today I’m going to be talking about the difference between training and working out. If you would like to learn more about how we help people at Custom Fitness train, then give us a call at 806-322-3188.
Today I have a question for you: do you train or do you workout? There’s a pretty big difference, believe it or not. If you’ve been to those workout classes where you go in, you sweat really good, and you felt pretty sore afterwards, but you never really saw any results, typically those are more of what you would call a workout. Whereas if you would go in with something more specific in mind, and are achieving true results, then you’re more likely doing some training.
So, training is where you actually follow a specific program with an end goal in mind. And while we often think that we have those end goals in mind, and that we’re doing what we can at the gym- going to these classes on our own, you just never really reach those goals. So when you aren’t able to reach your goals as planned, you realize that you were never really training for it, and that you didn’t have the right plan to really reach those goals. So the next time that you’re gearing up to go to the gym you might want to stop and think about what your purpose is for going. Do you have a specified plan and a goal that you’re reaching towards? Are you going to get that done with the purpose in mind?
So if you’re training, then you got this goal in mind, and now you’re going to create or refine that specific program, and that’s where a trainer comes in handy. A trainer can help create that program towards reaching that goal and lead you in that direction. I can understand as a personal trainer in Amarillo that when people try to do things on their own, they can feel like they are putting a lot of effort and time in, but are just not getting it done. This is why you need to pay attention to the end result, as well as the actual work being done.
So if training is following a specific plan with an end goal in mind, then working out is when you go to the gym with no specific routine, or goal, or possibly too generic of a goal. And a lot of times we don’t think about anything past “I want to get in shape”, when that can mean a lot of different things. So we really have to narrow that goal down and find the specifics of what is most important to us, and what we actually need in order to get to that goal. Keep in mind what is going to work best for your body, and time. Make sure that you’re not wasting your efforts and money on something that won’t work.
So if you want to be doing more at the gym then just getting a good sweat on, then you want to be sure that you’re focusing on training rather than working out. So for me, I would rather not sit in a hot room, say a sauna, and just sweat for no reason. If i’m going to sweat, I might as well make it worth it. Same with your workouts, if you’re going to be working out, you might as well be making sure that the effort you’re putting forth is worth it, you’re getting what you want out of it, and that you’re not just wasting a lot of time there. So make sure to start to set those specific goals. If your goal is weight loss, getting fit, or getting healthy, then that is a great point to start at. The next step after that is to narrow it down to get to the specifics as you go along. So once you have those specific goals, you can reach out to someone like a trainer, or a nutritionist, or a dietitian, whoever you need to get to to where you need to be.
So remember: training gets you results, and working out makes you sweat. So, which do you want? Now that 2017 is closing out and we’re nearing 2018, people are starting to set their goals, some realistic and some not. During this time, your first goal may be to think about getting back on routine, and while you are thinking about that routine, go ahead and start to think about what you’ll really need to help you get there. Do you need a personal trainer? Do you need a better nutrition plan? Do you need an accountability partner? There are so many different support tools that you can use, and what you need might vary from what someone else might need. So check in with yourself, find out what your goals really are, and set a specific plan.
