Hi guys,  Kris from Custom Fitness here, your Amarillo personal trainer. Today we’re going to be talking about wind. If you have any questions about today’s blog, then please give us a call at (806)-322-3188

So… wind. It sounds kind of a silly topic for health and fitness, but hang with me in there and let’s see where this goes. So, wind is a really an amazing thing. It helps to cool you off, it helps to keep the bugs away, it helps to move seeds around and plant them in different places, it can float leaves in the air, but it can also do other things, right?

I live in the panhandle of Texas, right in the heart of Tornado Alley, and to make it better, my home is actually out in the country a little ways to where the wind is always blowing. To give you a little perspective, whenever the hurricanes blow and the newscasters are on TV talking about the 60 mile an hour winds or the 50 mile an hour winds, and they’re holding on to their hats and things are blowing away, that’s just a normal, typical day here in the panhandle. Typical winds, 50 and 60, we see that all the time.

That tells you that wind can be a little more powerful than just a breeze. It can come in all different forms. So, take for instance, just a week ago near Amarillo, we had an incident of bad weather where straight-line winds came in and they were caving in roofs and they were blowing out windows and things like that. We have tornadoes that can lift cars and houses and things off the ground, can uproot trees. So, winds can be kind of docile, but they can also be very powerful, very strong. If you think about that for a moment, how something can be lackadaisical in one moment and then completely change over in another and it has two completely different results, right? So, compare that to your efforts for your health and fitness.

I bring this up because a lot of people will come in saying, “Well, I’ve tried this program and it didn’t work after two or three weeks, so I tried this program for another month and it didn’t work, so I tried this program.” The problem isn’t necessarily the program. Now, I’m not saying that there aren’t programs out there that are out there to just make money and not give you results because there are.

But, there are also a lot of good founded programs out there that are going to bring you better health and fitness, but you have to stay the course. Now, if you’re looking for that magic pill, that cure, that one secret that nobody else knows about that’s gonna help you to automatically become the healthiest and most fit person in the world, it just doesn’t exist. What that takes is hard work and dedication.

So, what we’re looking for whenever we’re trying to change our health and fitness is more of that straight-line wind effect because if you put enough pressure and enough intensity and enough consistency, over time, you’re gonna have something happen, right? So, just like that straight-line wind hitting that roof and caving it in, if your health and fitness efforts have consistency plus focus, over time, you will get results. That’s just how it goes. The body has to have time to develop that. Every now and then, we’ll have a client who maybe is progressing a little slower than what they’d like to. In their mind, they think, “Man, by tomorrow, I’m gonna be in this shape,” or, “By next week, I’ve really been kicking in the gym, I’m gonna be here.”

The problem is that the body doesn’t always respond that way, and especially depending on what you’ve done to it in the past. If you’ve been experimenting with yo-yoing diets or crash diets where you’re up and down and up and down, or you’re in the gym for a few weeks and then you’re out of the gym for a few weeks, we’ve got to realize that that does long-term damage to the inside of our body that takes time to heal. It may not be with you forever, but it does take time to heal that damage. Sometimes, doing the right thing over time, in the beginning, is just doing the healing process. It can’t even begin to change until it fixes that problem.

So, how do we do that? How do we bring consistency and focus, mix in time, and actually get results? Well, the big thing is that we’ve got to change our focus from our results … I know, right … to our behaviors. I know that you’re thinking something crazy about how I don’t believe in results, but that’s not true. What I’m saying is if you only focus on weight loss, then any diet will do. You can go through a three week, six week crash diet and you can get weight loss, but that does not create long-term results to keep you from having to do it again. That puts you back in that yo-yo. However, if instead of focusing just on the results, we focus on the behaviors that get us to those results, we start to see things happen more consistently and maintain them longer.

My goal with all of our clients is to make sure that when they come in to see me the first time, it’s square one, that we don’t ever move back to square one again. We constantly progress forward, whether they’re with me or they’re not with me. Because they know what to do at that point, we’ve educated them. We’ve got other blogs out there on education instead of just taking people through things. Feel free to look at those. So, we want to work on the behaviors in order to get them the results and then continue forward.

That’s what I ask you to do. Look at your desires, look at your focus in a little different way. So, if you are consistently focusing on behaviors, what would that be? Consistent exercise, intentional food choices, focused attention to your sleep habits, making sure that you’re getting what you need through the week. Each and every day, not just weekdays and then go crazy on the weekend, but be intentional about your choices each week and each day. Those behaviors begin to build into results happening without you having to think so hard about it.

As you start to exercise, say, three to five days a week and you start to eat well, say, 80% of the time and you start to sleep well most days of the week, your body’s automatically gonna have what it needs to start making those changes. So, when you put a little effort here and there and then you get tired and you change, it really doesn’t make much of an impact. It’s that wind blowing the leaf and just kind of letting it dance across the air. But when you become intentional, focused, and consistent over time, you can blow the roof off a building just from your intensity.

So, take a little lesson from the wind. Take a day or two to kind of think that through. Figure out how you can be more consistent, more focused, for a longer period of time.
