We try to make this whole health and fitness and wellness thing be so complicated, and it really doesn’t. Really, honestly, the simplest things will work if we would just apply them, but we all know what to do, or at least that’s what I hear all the time. Right? People walk in, they say, “Well, I know what to do. I just don’t do it,” or “I know that I need to eat such and such, or I know that I need to not eat such and such, or I know that I need to exercise so often or do this for my body, but I just don’t get it done. Maybe I’m too busy, maybe I just don’t focus on it, maybe I’ve got other things pulling me to the side, taking up all my time. There’s just no way to get it done.”
Well, the thing is that after they hit that epiphany of they know what to do, but they don’t have time, then they start searching for these magic pill answers because there’s got to be something easier than actually doing what we know works. Right? So if two plus two equals four, why are we going around trying to find a different method to get to four if we know that that works? It’s the same idea, yet we always try to take the most complicated route, and it’s just because we have this belief, we really are very positive thinkers. We think there’s got to be a better way, an easier way, a faster way than what we already know.
The truth is that God gave us a body and he gave us the means to keep it healthy. He gave us movement, He gave us food, He gave us the desire to be active and to eat, and these things are great, but in our society these days, we’re looking for the lazy man’s route a lot of times. We just don’t realize that what we are doing is the most important thing that we could be doing. Right? The right things are the most important things.
I had a client come in not too long ago that sat down with me and said, “You know. I’ve been with you for this long, and I’ve done all these things, and they’ve worked great. You know? In the first six weeks, I did this. In the first 12 weeks, I did this. You know, by the first year, I’d lost this much and everything was great and I felt wonderful, but you know, all of a sudden, I hit this plateau about a month ago, and I just feel like I need to find something new, that my body’s used to what I’m doing, so I need to find something new.”
We sat down and discussed because sometimes people forget about all the support that we have. Sometimes people get too busy to call and set up another appointment. And so, that’s why we check in with people all the time and make sure, and that’s where this conversation came out of was just a check-in call to make sure that things were going well.
So, instead of switching gears, we were able to tweak and adjust what she was doing because, in truth, where she had seen all the results this whole time was on one specific way of doing things, and then she kind of fell off the bandwagon as Fall came and stress started building and things were happening and didn’t even realize it.
A lot of times we eat things we don’t even know that we’re eating. We miss out on exercise days and we don’t even add them up. We don’t know how often it’s been. Things happen. Life is not in a bubble, so we can’t pretend like it is. We have to know that there will be challenges. There will be things in our path that we have to overcome. We have to learn how to maneuver around and figure out how to get back on track with what our goals are and with what our desires are.
More often than not, even just the goal of health, not even looking at weight loss and those things, but just the goal of better health because we know that if you’re healthy, your body will lose that excess fat, and you will gain the muscle that you need as long as you are doing the things that you need to keep it healthy.
So she came in talking about how she needed to change things and try something different. So we had a conversation about how, perhaps, there was a different way. Perhaps what was more important than change was looking at what she’s currently doing and finding consistency in the healthy behaviors that she knows she needs to have. We look over what she was currently doing.
As I said, she’d kind of fallen off the wagon. She was getting in a few extra soft drinks than what she thought she was getting in, a little more alcohol than what she thought she was getting in, a little more carbs than what she thought. It was all kind of coming into the mix. Just little things here and there. It wasn’t that she was eating overly bad, it was just that some extra stuff had come back in and her exercise hadn’t been as consistent.
So i’m going to end part one here. In part two we’re going to be talking more about how we helped this client to get back on track.
