Hi guys,  Kris from Custom Fitness here, your Amarillo personal trainer. Today we’re going to be talking about the law of control and how it is seriously messing up your life. This is going to be the first part in a three part series, so be on the lookout for part two coming soon. And if you have any questions about today’s blog, then please give us a call at (806)-322-3188

I’m a type A personality. Some people say that the need to be in control of situations is in my blood. So today I am just curious if you ever feel that way too? Do you have that feeling that you need to control everything? And when you can’t control everything, usually it doesn’t turn out great.

This week I found myself in this situation that way pretty heavy, where I couldn’t possibly control the outcome. And in truth, it really frustrated me. I wasn’t frustrated because I thought I could control it, but it was just the fact that there was nothing that I could do that got to me. There was absolutely nothing in my power that I could do to to change the situation. But I also find it interesting when I come into situations like that, when I see how similar we as people are. No matter what the circumstances, we all face the same issues. So I got to thinking about what that’s all about.

Like I said, my whole life being a type A personality, people have always joked about how I have to have certain levels of control. And so it’s kind of interesting to me how it goes across the board. It’s not just a personality specific issue, it’s a human issue. And so, the law of control states that “we feel good about ourselves to the degree to which we feel that we are in control of our own lives”. When we are mentally, physically, and emotionally controlling the changes in our own lives, then that naturally leads us to higher levels of achievement, emotional satisfaction, and sense of fulfillment.

However, uncontrolled change leads to stress, anxiety, frustration, and misery. All of that signifies that our mind lacks the discipline, order, or structure needed in order to accomplish success. If you’ve ever had any experience in the health and fitness realm in your life-if you’ve ever been trying to reach a goal and haven’t quite reached it, then maybe you’ve felt some of those things.

So, of course we are going to turn this into a health and fitness topic, because that’s what we do here. But I really do think that the law of control is a mirror image of what I experience in meetings everyday with clients. It really boils it down to a very simple point: people will change whenever it’s in their control, but they will resist change when it’s outside of their control. If people get to choose exactly what they want to do and how they’re going to do it, then great, as long as they change habits how they wanted to when they wanted to. But if they don’t get to choose or be in control of that situation, or the change doesn’t happen in the way that they think it should, then that’s when those feelings of frustration and anger come in.

So pretty much everyday i have someone come in and tell me that they’ve tried X,Y,Z before and they haven’t seen the changes they wanted in the time that they wanted so that made them feel really frustrated. Sounds familiar right? Others claim that they would just be happy if they could lose that extra weight, or regain their health, or energy, etc… But that’s only if it happens how and when they want it to.

Who has ever started a diet and thought about how ready they are to change their lives, health, body, ect…, and then you get down to it and you don’t follow through. There are foods you absolutely don’t want to eat and foods that you really, really don’t want to cut out. There is always that little bit of us that wants to be in control of that situation.

And the truth is that that body doesn’t always work the way that we want it to. Sometimes as we’re on this weight loss or fitness or health journey, things won’t go as planned. Maybe you burn fat first, or you build muscle first, or it’s going at the same time and it’s not going at the rate you want. You really can’t decide in what order that goes in, it just depends on your DNA and how your body is built. If you have a body type that builds more muscle, then it is very hard to not let that muscle build as you’re burning fat. It’s kind of a fact of life.

So i’m going to end part one here. In part two we’re going to be talking more about the law of control.
