If you have questions about today’s blog or would like more information about how to find the time, give us a call: 806-322-3188.
When we are too busy for the good stuff (like fitness or nutrition), we end up sacrificing our bodies and brains to take care of others. We have to remember that we have to take care of ourselves first. I know. It feels selfish. Your hierarchy of needs, according to Maslow, is shaped like a pyramid. At the base is your physiological needs like nutritious food, water, physiological exertion, and shelter. Yes fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats are a form of self-care. A level up is your security layer where you lock in your health through fitness, maintaining familial relationships, and securing your job. Above that is friendship and social commitments. Without the base layers, your pyramid will fall apart long before you get to take care of anyone.
You want to make sure you are participating in self-care everyday, so you can reach the level where you are able to care for others.
I promise you, we all experience time issues. Even people who work in this field struggle to maintain the “perfect schedule” to get everything done. I’ve been a personal trainer in Amarillo for seventeen years and I still feel like I am fifty steps behind where I should be when I crawl into bed. One of the best things I’ve found to get a workout in, regardless if it is stellar or just getting moving, is to do it in whatever time you have accessible. Now that school is back in session it may feel like your already packed schedule has just gotten worse. This time of year kid’s extracurricular activities have started, so parents are stuck waiting for them to finish. Typically you will be waiting near a large area like a gym or a field. Consider walking the hallway, going up and down the bleachers 2 at a time, or taking a lap or two around the perimeter. Get up and at least move a little.
A lot of my clients are getting programs tailored to the location where they wait for their children to finish their after school activities. I had one client who would duck under the bleachers to get their workout done in privacy, but they did it! The key is to find any time you have to care for yourself.
Maybe you aren’t waiting around. Maybe you get home from work exhausted and you have to start on your house chores. Cooking dinner, starting laundry, picking up…the list goes on and on, doesn’t it? Hard to think that you’ll have the energy for a full hour workout once the dishes are put away. I personally do some kitchen workouts. While things are heating up on the stove, I’ll do some squats. I then do elevated push-ups on the counter tops. If you don’t mind putting your hands on the ground, not me, go whole-hog and do some burpees or regular push ups while you are waiting on things to boil or heat up. Pull up a chair and do a rear elevated lunge like I’ve demonstrated on previous videos.
You have so many options and sometimes it feels really overwhelming. That’s when a coach who can write you an Anytime Workout comes in pretty handy. We can write you a program that is a decent workout that will take you 10 minutes or less. Maybe it’ll raise your metabolism, burn a few extra calories, and just get you blood pumping. It doesn’t have to be anything long or intense. You can get a great workout in, in 10 minutes. Is that all you need? Of course not, but this is good for those days that are so incredibly jam packed that you don’t have time to get in the full 45 minutes.
Another case where this can be applied is if you a loved one in the hospital and you are sitting with them. Set your phone’s alarm to go off every 30 minutes to an hour. When you hear it, get up and go for a walk. Don’t be afraid to take stairwells. Don’t be afraid to go walk in the parking lot. Just go for a walk in an abandon hall to add in some walking lunge or lateral squats.
How can you put it all together? First you want to make sure you are getting a full body workout. That means you are incorporating your upper body, your core, and your lower body. Add in some cardiovascular and some strength. That would be great.
If you would like some help on creating your Anytime Workout, that’s what my team and I are here for. We create customized programs for you based on your level and where you will be working out. It could be here. It could be at the football stadium. It could be at the hospital. We research the methods and proper exercises to help you get to your goal as efficiently and effectively as possible in the time that you have available. We give our clients a “done-for-you” program, where all they have to do is follow it. They know the results will come. That is far better than those video programs that you subscribe to because it is customized to you and your lifestyle. Not to mention our programs are far more cost effective.
