Welcome back, everybody! I’m excited to get back into the sugar detox series today. There is a little more that we have to unpack, but hopefully by the end of this series you will be able understand the effects that sugar has on you.
So, last time we were talking about sugar detox and the side effects. So I know you’re probably wondering how long the side effects last. Well, they can usually be about three to four days. Through that three to four-day period, you may feel kind of crummy. I warn people of that, because they don’t want to be calling me with dirty names or ugly things to say, because it’s kind of a place that we put ourselves in, so if it lasts three to four days, then what happens?
Well, it feels like a light switch flips all of a sudden. If you will hardcore it through those days and not mess with it, then you will feel like a light switch flipped, and you’ll feel great after you get through that. If you kind of dilly-dally through it, and you take a little here and a little there, and you just minimize it rather than cut it out, that’s where you end up with some major trouble, because then it starts to drag those symptoms on, and you just kind of feel crummy, but not real crummy, and not real great, and you can’t really figure out what’s going on. It’s because we’ve minimized the problem, but we haven’t gotten rid of the problem.
That’s just mainly talking about the processed sugars, the extra products, things like that, people putting sugar in their coffee, in their tea, and those things. It just allows that system to keep going. As I said earlier, sugar actually affects your brain. It reacts similarly to how cocaine and heroin act, and they create this addiction back and forth to where your body does need some, so it cries out for it. We overeat it, and then the body starts to misunderstand what those signals mean, and we’ve got to kind of change that rhythm or that habit of what’s going on.
After the detox, everybody wants to know, “Am I never going to be able to have sugar again? What is this, what’s going to happen to me?” Well, afterwards, you want to make sure that if sugar is your vice that we stay off of it for a little while as far as those sweet treats and all those extras. Really give yourself time to adjust to that. Remember that for every day that you’re doing this that feels so hard, think about how many weeks and months you had done this before, that it became a habit. We’ve got to rebuild in that. We’re still in the infancy of change, if you will, but over time, you’ll find a point where, “Yeah, I can have a little bit of this, and it’s okay, but I don’t need, maybe, the whole piece of cake this time.”
As you go through that, what’s going to happen is, those things are going to start to taste sweeter, more vibrant, if you will, and that’s going to cause you to be satisfied with less of them. Typically, people who are satisfied with that, taste and texture at that point is, they’re not going to go overboard with eating too many sweets and treats, because it just doesn’t feel the same anymore. Believe it or not, but that sweet tooth can shrink. A little bit will be able to go a long way. So you won’t be giving up sugar forever, there is still some room for joy, but you will be able to control yourself so that you are taking in a healthy amount.
That is going to wrap up our series on sugar detox! I hope that kind of gives you a little light into the detox. Would I recommend that? Well, depends on who you are, kind of what you’re coming from as to whether or not you need that. If you need a great kickstart to getting back on track and you feel like you have overdone the sweets, then that might be a great place to start, but if you have been eating pretty clean, and just ready to kind of find a new direction or get back on the path of more firm focus on what you’re doing, then you may not need it. That’s where a nutrition consult can really help you out.
