Welcome back to our two parter on time management and self care. Last time I really hammered in the fact that self care is necessary. Hopefully some of you started to take the time to think about what self care looks like in your life. Is it few and far between? Does is sometimes not come in the healthiest of ways? Maybe self care is non existent in your life. Whatever that may be, take some time after reading part two and really think about how you want self care to look in your life going forward.
So, getting back into it. I mentioned “time budgeting” last time, and time budgeting is a huge thing. After you take that assessment internally, figure out how important this is to you, and if you say that it is worth your time then what do you do next? Well, we start by scheduling it, even if it’s that small five minutes a day. We have come up with exercises that we can give people for five minutes so that they can get some sort of workout. Is it going to get them to their ultimate goal of losing 50 pounds? No, but it’s going to start the process of making time for themselves so that they can do that.
We want to schedule in that time, we want to put it in your calendar. Whether you have it written down on a sheet of paper or in your calendar on your phone, make sure that it is there and that you don’t schedule over it. That important meeting that you have with yourself over self care is just as important as your meeting with your next client or your next patient, even those dinners with friends. You have to make sure that you take care of yourself first.
Second, we have to limit distractions. If you are scheduling “me time” in the middle of a busy office, or in the middle of your crazy where the phone is ringing, the laundry is going, the kids are screaming, then it’s going to be really hard to take that time for you. But if you plan that time out in maybe a way where you take that lunch hour and go out to your car and take a minute to be yourself and relax. Or you can go to that workout class and call the babysitter. There are ways to work around it, and yes it does take getting out of that cozy comfort zone which I am so often pulled out of, but you have to get pulled out of that comfort zone and find a new normal. Find something that is healthier and works for you so that you’ll be able to take care of yourself.
So we’ve got to limit these distractions because how easy is it to say “Great! I’m going to get my workout in at home today!” and then all of the sudden the phone rings, or the dryer goes off. Now you’ve been sucked back in and you really didn’t utilize that time at all. So you really have to pay attention to your surroundings. Know your surroundings, but also know the people around you and kind of what’s happening so that you can plan a minimal distraction during that small amount of time just for you.
Now the last thing is to make it enjoyable to make it happen. So if you’re going to do something new, then you are already trying to cram it into a tight schedule and your brain is like, “Yeah, I don’t know if this is worth it…”, and then if you take all of that and you’re trying to push something that’s not enjoyable into that… it’s not a fun time. It is very, very likely that it’s not going to last long. Your brain is going to kick around and all of the sudden you’ve talked yourself out of it.
So instead of going through all of that, let’s focus on making it something that you enjoy. If it’s going for a walk, walking with friends, going to an exercise class with friends, learning how to cook. Those types of things are enjoyable to people, maybe it’s not who you’re with but it’s what you’re doing. Maybe you keep trying to cook chicken and salad, and your should be cooking something more elaborate and fun. Find what works with you to make it enjoyable, and being just the fact that it’s enjoyable will make it easier to be consistent with it.
So the next time that you start to think that you don’t have the time for self care or for yourself, start to do that evaluation process and figure out what you do have time for and what you do want in your life. Doing that will start to bring you into a better place.
