Hi guys, Kris from Custom Fitness – Amarillo’s Personal Training Studio, where your health comes first and today, well, it’s getting to be close to those warm months, where we’re starting to wear clothes that are a little less concealing and a little more revealing. So today we’re going to discuss simple changes. If you have any questions about today’s blog, then please give us a call at (806)-322-3188.
Like I was saying, those warm months typically lead to a state of panic for most people, when they start to realize … “If I wear that, I may not look the way that I want to.” We start to get in this panic mode of, “How am I going to be able to wear these clothes and look great for the warmer months whenever I’m not where I want to be?” So typically, that panic mode leads us into this thought process: Cut out all calories, or at least as many as I can possibly cut out until I pass out, and start to exercise three times more than what I ever did. Or start exercising, because I didn’t start in January.
We kind of get in this procrastinator mode, right? We thought about starting earlier in the year, but just didn’t do it. Maybe things got busy or we got tied up with family or whatever it may be. And now here we are and we panic. And we think, “Well, I’ve got to get it done, and I’ve got to do it now.” So it leads us into these bad trains of thought.
Now, what I just mentioned, as far as a panic plan, that really doesn’t work for two reasons. Number one is that doing it probably won’t get you the results that you’re wanting. It’s just not going to look right. And number two is you’re diving off the diving board into the deepest end of water that you possibly can without knowing how to swim. So you’re probably going to make a few strokes and get tired and bored and stop. Now, granted, in the water you wouldn’t because then you’re going to drown, but that’s what it’s going to feel like, right? So you get going with something, and instead of drowning, you feel like you’ve failed, and that is one of the worst things to do.
It’s one of the worst feelings to have, but yet we put ourselves through that over and over again, and it’s almost like we bring it on ourselves because we know that we can’t change everything in our life in one moment, even in a day, and yet we constantly come back to that idea.
And the idea is, last time I didn’t have enough willpower. Last time, I was too tired. Last time, I had this going on. This time will be better. Well, the problem is, if you don’t have a different plan, this time isn’t going to look any different than last time. So, you know, you’ve probably heard it said that Albert Einstein’s little quote of, you know, “If you continue doing the same thing over and over again and expect a different result, that’s the definition of insanity.”
So instead of being insane, let’s find the right way to do this this time, and the right way is by making, first of all, a plan. Where do I want to go? And where am I at now? And then creating simple, small changes to get to that result. Now, will it come as fast as next week? Probably not. There’s ways that it could, but it’s going to take a lot more brainpower than probably what you have to offer it at this moment because if you’re like everyone else, it’s April, and April and May are almost as bad as November and December.
It’s like the holidays all over again, right? Everything starts revving up. We’re getting ready for kids to graduate. We’re getting ready for all these showers coming up. We’re getting ready for the end of school. There’s a million things going on, so try to make these two changes right now, probably are not going to help you any.
However, if you start to make some small, simple changes, you’re going to start to see changes over time, and that’s the goal, right? It’s like dingo these large leaps into a pool and you do somehow manage to swim back to the shallow end. When you’re there you typically get out and go back to the diving board and jump back in, right? And then you’ve got to do it all over again. That’s what happens with our weight-loss plans. A lot of times, we go crazy and we do these big crash diets, crash plans, and we get to where we want to be, and then we go right back to where we were at the start. What is the point? You wasted your time, your money, your mentality and some of your sanity doing that.
So instead, it’s time to find a better way. What if you were to be able to jump in at the shallow end, right? And then learn how to swim going longer, so that this becomes a lifestyle change, and you can actually maintain the results that you get for a lifetime. Not by doing crazy things, not by eating a different meal than what your family’s eating, not by restricting your calories so much that you hate food and hate life, but rather, through consistent effort over time.
Athletes do not get to the Olympics or even to the pros by exercising or working out once. They don’t do it by playing ball for a year. They get there by consistently training their bodies and their minds over time, and they consistently do that until they’re there, right? And then after that, they maintain where they’re at. So that’s kind of what we want to do. We want to remember that you are an athlete in your own right. You may not play a sport. I don’t play a sport, but I’m a mom. Mom is my sport, right? I’ve got to be able to keep up with kids. I’ve got to be able to have energy. I don’t get a lot of time for me, and so I’ve got to be able to do what I need to do in shorter amounts of time, so I can still take care of everybody else.
So if that’s kind of how you’re feeling, then we need a new direction. What kind of simple changes do we need to make?
Well, first off, we need to make sure that we get the right nutrition plan to fuel our body. We’re not restricting our body. Now, we are cutting out some of the junk that we’ve been eating, right? Because think about it like this, if you go out to your car and you put apple juice in the tank, it’s not going to run as well, right? Because that’s junk. It doesn’t need that. It needs gasoline. Your body doesn’t need some of the foods that you’ve been eating because they’re not real foods. They’re chemicals. So instead, we need actual food. We need to fuel our body with the right sources, so that we can go forward and be able to do the work that we need to do. So that’s step number one; start to fuel our body correctly and really, if all you do is focus on eating real food, you will see dramatic differences there.
So number two is to find a way to add exercise in that works for you. If going to the gym three to four days a week is boring or doesn’t fit in your schedule, don’t sign up for the membership. It doesn’t make any sense. Instead, find something you can do at home, or find something that you can do while your child’s playing sports. Maybe you can go and work out under the bleachers or, you know, back in a classroom. Really anything like that.
Finding a way to make it work is the biggest step for most people because we have this idea in our head of what it should be, and a lot of times, we just can’t fit ourselves into what it should be, and so we feel like we can’t do anything. But the truth is that exercise can happen anywhere. If you’re at the playground, if you’re sitting on a set of bleachers, if you are at home. It doesn’t matter. You can do work-outs. They don’t have to be huge and heavy with heavy weights, but they can be efficient and effective and help to change your body over time.
So just wanted to kind of open your eyes to that. The next step would be lifestyle changes. So we have nutrition, we have exercise. Lifestyle’s a big part of that, too, and just making sure that number one, you’re taking time to rest and recover like you need to because this time of year gets really crazy busy and a lot of people stop resting and recovering. So you’ve got to do that. You’ve got to take time to rest and recover. You’ve got to take time to breathe.
So my favorite way to do that is to go hang out with my kids outside. Right? And to play with them, because it’s not as intense as some work-outs that I would do, but it is more fun, and you laugh, which is a great stress relief, and it helps your body to balance things out, so it’s a good way to kind of wind down the day.
