Last time we talked about the first three steps to getting your to-do list done. If you read the first post then you already know to do a brain dump, make a plan, and find some accountability. Now we are continuing with the last of my tips, and a story that I’m sure we all can find relateable.

So #4 may seem obvious, but it’s honestly the hardest one: you need to actually get started. You can know everything in the book, you can have every list that you want, you can have a perfect plan, but if you don’t actually start then nothing is ever going to get done. Don’t set your mind to tomorrow, or next week, or next month, focus on today. Today you find one small thing that you can do from that list and you get it done. When you mark off that task you are going to feel so accomplished.

So you want to be sure that you do get started. So make a plan and then plan today to get started. But you need to understand that it will not all get done in a day. That is our #5: you will not get it all done in a day.

If you have been stockpiling this stuff in your head for a month or longer, then you have too much to do to be able to get it all done in a day, especially if you live life normally. So you need to understand that before you start and that you plan for that. You need to factor into your plan the time that it is going to take to actually accomplish all of these things. It might take a really long time to get all of these tasks done and that they are done well. I know that no one wants to mess up a task and have to do it later.

I’m reminded of this person that would tell me that they had so many things on their list to get done. They would almost go into a depression over it because of how stressed out they were. This person would even get sick all of the time. This kind of stress physically affects you, it affects you mentally, and it affects you emotionally, and that is what happened with this person. You get shut down when all of this chaos and stress is in your life.

So they would come in day after day to me and tell me how many things they had to get done. We would try and work through and I would give her ideas on how to get through this list, but she wasn’t quite ready. You have to be ready to be able to get it done. It’s the same thing with exercise and everything else, you have to be ready to make that commitment.

So one day this person came in and said that they were finally done with all of this stress and had to get this problem fixed. So we sat down together and I had them write down every single thing that was on their to-do list. And it honestly was the most freeing experience for this person. They sat down and spent at least 20 minutes thinking about everything that they possible had to get done.

When I sit down and make a list it’s usually four pages, theirs was seven items. Seven things was all that it was and these seven things had been torturing this person for over nine months. It was things like cleaning out the linen closet, or organizing recipes, or reorganizing the pantry. It was these little things that could have been done many times by now, but the brain shut down and would not let it get done.

So we sat down together and created a plan. We broke it all down into a way that would work for them. Everyone is different as far as what they can handle in a day with tasks, so we made sure it worked for them. And this poor person was so stressed out over this that we broke it down into the tiniest baby steps. And when they started following that plan, you would not believe the look of joy on that person’s face. It was great to be able to watch the stress melt off of them, and I was also there as an accountability partner. I’d give her a call and check in and see how they were coming along with their tasks.

So that story always reminds me of this topic. Sometimes it’s the simplest tasks that will stay up in your head for the longest. It can be hard to get those things done when you aren’t prepared or don’t have the support, but if you have a plan and have good people on your side then I know that you can accomplish everything that you set out to!
