Hi guys,  Kris from Custom Fitness here, your Amarillo personal trainer. Today we’re going to be talking about being present. This is going to be the first part in a two part series, so be on the lookout for part two coming soon. And if you have any questions about today’s blog, then please give us a call at (806)-322-3188

Well we have all heard in the working world that “there is being absent and there is absenteeism”. There is actually a new word now that is circulating and it is “presenteeism”. That is where you are actually present at work, you’re there, but you are not actually being productive. You’re just being busy, or you’re not really doing anything you’re just looking on facebook or whatever it may be.

Now with being absent or absenteeism is when someone is actually not at work. They’re sick or injured or just decided to take some time off. Presenteeism again is where somebody is physically there, but they’re not mentally there. Maybe they went through a hard breakup, maybe they had a bad weekend, and they just can’t really think cognitively the way that they need to be productive at work.

So this applies not only in work but in life and fitness. There is so many places where we as humans become very lazy. Think about the last time that you drove to work and did you pay attention to the road the whole way there or did did you just kind of automatically go through the motions and ended up at work? You might start to think about it and realize that you don’t even remember the last five or ten minutes of the drive, and that can be scary. You start to realize that maybe you aren’t as focused as you should be. And you might realize this is other aspects of your life and realize that you’re wasting time not being productive.

As a business owner I have to focus on being productive instead of being busy. It’s very easy to get into the paperwork shuffle that keeps me busy, but not actually get what I need to get done, done.

And I apply this to fitness because I have worked with people for almost twenty years now with people of all different kinds of mindsets and attitudes. Some didn’t give a lick about working out and some who wanted to compete and were serious and everything in between.

There was this client I had that really brought this idea to mind today. Long ago when I was beginning training I still held the same philosophies and beliefs that I do today: I want to help people learn how to do what they need to do, I am going to provide them with every tool possible, but I can’t do it all for them.

I would have this woman come in and she would get very irate with me that I wouldn’t keep count of every rep she did, that I wouldn’t hand her weights to her every single time, and I wouldn’t prepare her work area every single time. And that was because I wanted to try and teach her how to do it at home. She was trying to get these workouts in at home and never could remember what weights to grab or what equipment she needed. So we would use these mental tips and tricks to be able to help her learn how to do that.

There was no things that we hadn’t done with several of the clients before, but this particular woman really did not appreciate that. She eventually came right out and told me that she was paying me good money to count all of her reps for her, at which point I had to explain the other 99% of what I do for people: programming, motivation, making sure that everything is safe, keepng form in check, and much more. There is a lot more that trainers do than just counting reps.

So it just reminded me of the mindset of the fact that she said she wanted me to count her reps because she wanted to come in, do the workout, and not have to think about anything else. She just wanted to go through the motions. My problem with that is that I know that if you go through the motions you’re actually going to cut your results by about tenfold. So that means that if you are present in the moment and actually paying attention to your reps, then you’re actually going to increase your results tenfold and i’ve seen that happen over and over again.

So i’m going to end part one here. In part two we are going to be talking more about how being mentally checked out affects your life, and three ways to be more present.

I hope that y’all got something great out of today’s blog and were able to relate it to your own lives. I know how easy it can be to fall into complacency, but there are ways to work yourselves out of that rut.
