You’re working out, following your nutrition plan, you are even parking a little further from the stores to get more steps in.  Yet, your weight loss results and measurements aren’t measuring up. What’s going on? If you’re experiencing disappointment with your health plan, you’re not alone. Many people experience a few bumps on the path to reaching their fitness goals. Here’s what you can do to overcome these challenges:

Discuss Your Expectations with Your Personal Trainer

In the beginning of your workout and nutrition plan, set goals with a personal trainer or nutrition expert. Have frequent, regular weigh-ins, and measurement sessions. This will help you track where you’ve been and if anything has changed.  Sometimes when we rely solely on one method (the scale or just the tape measure) we are only seeing part of the big picture. Our bodies change in small increments in different ways: a pound here, an inch there, etc. If you’re disappointed with your current results, talk to your personal trainer or nutrition guide. Ask him or her what expectations are realistic at this stage of your plan. How quickly do you expect to lose inches or pounds? How much muscle gain do you want to achieve? A professional can tell you what results you can expect and when to expect them. Keep in mind, you didn’t gain weight overnight, so you can’t lose it that fast either! But, a little reassurance from your personal trainer goes a long way to keep you on track!

Stay on the Fitness and Nutrition Programs

Consistency over time is the best way to reach your fitness goals. Frequently stopping and restarting your healthy habits will slow down your results. You would be amazed how many people I have seen as a personal trainer in Amarillo come through my doors ready to work, but not willing to follow the diet plan regularly.  Your body can’t change for the better if you’re feeding it fast food twice a day. Even if you don’t see results as fast as you’d like to, keep building the momentum you’ve started. Keep doing your workouts, and stay on the diet plan. Nutrition is approximately 80% of the equation to your weight loss health plan. Don’t let little bad choices keep you from reaching your big goals. One snack outside of your meal plan CAN mess up your body’s response to your overall program.

Understand Your Body Type

Everyone’s body responds differently to outside stimuli. Nutrition and Fitness programs work best when they are based on the individual’s current body assessment and abilities. Your personal trainer should customize and personalize your program. Knowing where you’re starting is the first step in figuring out where you’re going. And, knowing how your body will respond along the way will help you understand what results to expect at each measurement. Always communicate with your personal trainer or nutrition guide about how your body is responding to the program. He or she will tell you if you’re on track for your body type.

Remember That Weight Loss Results Take Time

When you’re working hard and in the middle of a big change, it’s sometimes hard to remember that results take time. We like results and we like them now.  Sorry guys, instant gratification isn’t the name of this game. Even though some people can see results at 2-3 weeks in, many people won’t see change in measurements change until 4-6 weeks into the program. This goes back to understanding your body type and building momentum. Although it’s hard to keep doing the right thing when you’re not getting the weight loss results you want, remember why you started in the first place. Now is the time to dig deep into yourself and find motivation to keep going. And, if you need a little extra encouragement, don’t be afraid to ask your personal trainer for some reassuring words to get you through your frustration. Coaching isn’t just about physical training. Positive reinforcement and mental strategy are keys to success!

Rework the Game Plan

If you are following your personalized program religiously but still not seeing realistic results, it may be time to assess any issues with the program or create a new game plan. Your personal trainer or nutrition guide will work through the weight loss formula with you. Minor changes can make a big difference, such as adding or replacing one exercise in your workout plan. Changing the focus on which areas or muscle groups you’re targeting can also improve results. You don’t have to keep doing what doesn’t work if long-term improvements are never made.

Consider Your History

Your personal history of dieting and overexercising or under-exercising may affect your body’s state of health months or even years later. Discuss your workout and diet history with your personal trainer to pinpoint areas that may impact your body’s response to your current health plan. A nutrition plan and exercise plan that is based on your personal health history will help improve how quickly you see results. Share your previous dieting successes and failures with your personal trainer so that he or she can design the best customized plan.
