So, I’ve had this question come up many times in the past few weeks: “You want me to start working out now? During December? When I have all these things going on?” Well, I’m here to tell you that hope is not lost. There’s always a few simple things that you can add in to what you’re doing already.
But what the main goal is (and I’ll harp on this again), is to take care of you– to make sure that you are not only well, but that you have all the energy you need, the focus that you need, and to be able to take care of everybody that you need to take care of this season.
During the holidays I bet your focus automatically goes towards everyone else, and you may often forget about self care. And self care is hugely important in order to stay well enough to do all the things that you need to do and take care of other people.

So, why on earth would you decide to start now if you are planning on doing a million things? “I plan on eating Christmas sweets.”, “I’m too busy to even think about that right now.”, “This isn’t the right time of the year to start!”
Instead of making excuses, I think you need to take time to realize a few things:
#1. You need self care.
You need to take time to take care of yourself, to help your body to be as well and healthy as it can be, and to be able to do the work that you want to do, and need to do. Everyone has a task list in their heads that’s a mile long, but in order to be able to do those things you have to be healthy.
#2. Understanding that success doesn’t happen by accident.
You may be standing there looking in the mirror today and thinking about how “If i could only (fit in these clothes, not have this bulge, get rid of this, etc..)”. There’s a lot of things that people have in mind when they start a health and fitness routine. They have to realize though, that the success that people see from starting a routine doesn’t happen by accident. You can’t just wish it to happen, because it comes from both planning and commitment. If you plan to succeed, and commit to succeed, then it will happen.
As a personal trainer in Amarillo, I see a lot of people come into our programs and say “I can only do this for X amount of time.” But by the time they finish that, it has become more of a habit than anything and they end up continuing just because of that habit. This leads to better health and a better overall feeling.
This is why a lot of people say that, in the best way I can put it, like they start to feel less like they’re getting older. They start to take years back as they start to eat better and exercise better.
Know that in order to succeed you’ll have to focus on planning ahead and be really committing to what you’re doing. Too often people take on these short term ideas and never even start on them, or don’t finish them. And where does that leave you? It leaves you with less money, and no results.
So remember during the holidays, or just stressful times in general, that taking the time to care for yourself is going to make all the difference. Take care of your health so that you can be around and ready for more holidays to come.
