Last weekend I had great plans of getting so very many things done around my house that I’ve been needing to do for a while.
Earlier this summer I injured my back and had to go through a few months of physical therapy to heal … and this was the weekend I was going to catch up on all of the house things I had fallen behind on! I finally felt great and was ready to take it on.
Little did I know that when I got home from work on Saturday a couple of little girls had other plans for my weekend.
I had no sooner walked in the door that I began hearing intricate details of the project they had created in their minds that morning. They had it all figured out…they wanted mermaid tails :o)
Now we do crazy things at our house on a regular basis and this is most certainly not the first time they’ve played mermaids so, as much as I wanted to jump to my own tasks, I knew they would not let up until we did this.
They had designed a pattern and figured out the intricacies of sewing it together, even pressed the fabric before I got there! They were ready.
As I walked to the sewing machine, I had images of adorable fish tails for my darlings, but when I entered the room, I found 7 barbie dolls lying on top of their chosen fabrics! They weren’t wanting tails for themselves, just for multiple barbies :o)
They are always full of surprises and as much as I enjoy sewing, sewing small things for small dolls isn’t usually at the top of my list BUT it brought them so much joy as each one was finished and they had another mermaid to add to their collection that, I wouldn’t have rather done anything else for those several hours.
Sometimes we spend so much time planning, dreading, thinking and so forth during the week of what we will do with our precious time off that we miss the big moments.
Whether it’s spending time with family, bringing joy to some beautiful children or preparing to live life well for the next week, if we try to live too detail oriented, we may miss the boat.
If 2020 has taught us anything that we should carry forward with us, it’s that we are not 100% in control of our lives, environment, experiences, etc. In fact, we are much less in control than we think we are…BUT through that understanding of our lack of control, sometimes we are able to see outside of our comfort zone or daily schedule box to find areas that need our attention.
That is what growth is all about.
