Hi guys, Kris from Custom Fitness here, your personal trainer in Amarillo! Today I’m going to be talking about making today better. And you are not even going to have to work harder! In fact, I want you to NOT work as hard. If you would like to learn more about how we at Custom Fitness train, then give us a call at 806-322-3188.
The question: What is it about checking things off a list of “to-do’s” that makes us feel so great? the answer: Accomplishment of a goal.
It feels great to set goals AND achieve them even if it’s just your daily “to-do’s”. If you’re anything like me, your day can fill up quite quickly and leave you feeling exhausted and unsuccessful by the end of it.
It seems to be something we all go through from time to time, the overwhelming sense of trying to get too much done in too short of time.
So instead of trying to plan the “perfect” day, I encourage you to focus on just 3 things to make today a “better” day.
First, plan ahead. I know, it sounds impossible as you’re finishing up a hectic day at work, running kids from event to event or attending your 3rd holiday party of the week (let’s not even get started on hosting the party). Those are days that when you finally make it home, you just want to pass out so you can hopefully have enough energy to survive tomorrow.
But, if you’ll take just 5 minutes to think about the 3 biggest things that you NEED to get accomplished tomorrow, and then write them down (I’m one of those people who has some pretty great ideas before bed or while I’m falling asleep and then in the morning, I don’t remember one detail of them), you’ll have a successful to-do list for the next day. You see, too often we try to cram everything in our day and then when it doesn’t all get done, we feel defeated, frustrated or overwhelmed which then leads to a worse tomorrow rather than a better one.
Second, schedule time for YOU. I know it sounds curlicue and you want to tell me how even if you schedule it, it never happens or that with everything going on there’s no way you could find even 2 minutes for yourself in the day. Trust me, I get it! Without trying to offend anyone – excuses are the first response to stress. We all do it. It’s much easier to say “I can’t” then to find a way YOU CAN. As a wife, Mom, business owner and more, I will tell you that I would NEVER say it is easy but I will say IT’S A MUST! When we go through the day just hoping we’ll get time for a workout, time for a cup of tea, time to do our daily devotional…you get my point here, right? It just won’t happen. Time doesn’t appear out of thin air. We all have the same 24 hours in a day and I’ll tell you that the most successful people in life got that way due to their time management skills…that includes managing to take some time for yourself each day.
So whatever it is that you enjoy doing, plan time for that each day and mark it in your schedule as an appointment with yourself. You wouldn’t miss an important appointment would you? That’s a start. Then keep doing it. Even if the time starts out at 5 minutes, eventually you will see that the benefit out weighs the inconvenience and you’ll be able to increase your time or consistency or both.
Third, stay positive! It’s too easy to wallow in self defeat these days and I’ll tell you that even on the most successful days there will still be something you can complain about. I find that in times of high stress this is something that typically gets magnified. The surest way to end a great day poorly is to find the negative and focus in on it. One small negative focus can cause us to lose sight of the positive. How often does that negative thought magnify itself and become your whole day? But at the same time, the surest way to end a poor day fabulously is to find the one or two “silver linings” of the day and focus on them. By thinking of the positives, you are increasing your level and acknowledgment of your gratitude and that, my friend can actually enhance your health as well. If you haven’t tried this approach, you might think I’m a bit odd for even suggesting that you can turn your day around by looking at the small positives…try it out…you’ll see.
So you can see that having better tomorrows doesn’t mean they have to be perfect. It only means that we are not trying to be such over achievers that we create failure for ourselves before we begin. We have to take time to do the work we have/need/want to do and we have to take time for ourselves to recharge and refresh while focusing on the positives and not ignoring but minimizing the negatives. Having a better day isn’t something we have to struggle with. It’s something that usually is much easier to achieve than we typically want to believe. So start today, start right now and find your “better”.
