So, losing weight for good. What does it really take? First off, we have to decide if you are interested in just losing weight, or are you more interested in losing fat that is going to make your body look different? So, granted, you could want both of those and that’s fine, but if you are focused primarily on weight loss, then there are a lot of things that you can do to cause weight loss, but they don’t technically change your body any.

So, let me give you a bit of a mental image here. Imagine you have a kitchen sponge. It’s just a normal rectangular kitchen sponge. And you hold it in your hand and it’s really light. Now, you take it and hold it under the water and it’s wet, so now it weighs more. When you pull it out and let it dry out, it becomes light again. And this is kind of how our bodies work physiologically.

So our bodies have to hold onto water and they have to have a certain amount of liquid in them, from blood and all of those other lovely things, but you have to actually hold onto water for your body to actually function. We’ve talked many times before on how important hydration is, but whenever you think about weight, you have to understand that the body does have to have  certain amount of weight to be able to process and function in the way that it’s supposed to.

So, let’s take for instance, you eat a mexican food dinner. You have chips, you have tortillas, you have rice. And all of these things are starches, and the starches with every gram that you eat that causes you to hold onto three grams of water for processing. This means that while the body is processing those carbs, it has to have that extra three grams of water to be able to process those carbs. And once they have gone through the digestive system and they’re done, then the body can let that three grams of water go. And now remember that was for every gram that you ate. So if you made a huge mexican meal, then you are going to have some extra weight gain the next day and it may hang on for about 24 hours, but then you’ll start to see it slowly come off.

So, when you’re just looking at weight, again that kitchen sponge doesn’t really change that much does it? Again, the other thing is that you could stand on three different scales, maybe all of the same brand, and you might weigh different on each one. Weight is not actually a solid number. Each scale might be calibrated just a little differently, and you might get a little bit of a different number. And when that happens that also causes a problem, right? We only step on the scale when we really want to frustrate ourselves for the most part, because we know that it’s going to fluctuate and be different than what we like to typically see.

So, let’s take that sponge analogy again and go into the idea of losing fat. So, if we use that sponge for what it’s meant to be used for in a way that causes it to work and change just the getting wet and not getting wet, then as you start to scrub the dishes with that sponge it starts to wear away, right? And it starts to change the shape o that sponge. So yes, you’re still getting it wet, you’re still getting it dry, because this takes many weeks and months to happen, but the more that you use it to scrub on those dishes, the more that shape begins to form on the sponge and change what was there before.

What does that mean for us? Well, it means that whenever we are looking to lose weight, more often than not while people do want the number on the scale to go down, they are typically wanting their body to change. You may be with me on that, you not be, but more often than not people just want their body to look different, they want to feel different, and they want to feel healthier. All of those things go along with fat loss. Whenever you lose fat your weight will change, you will look different, you’re going to feel different, and you’re going to be healthier for it.

So i’m going to end part one here. In part two we’re going to be talking more about how to lose weight for good and the lifestyle changes that go along with it.
