Hi guys, Kris from Custom Fitness here, your personal trainer in Amarillo. Every now and then I have someone come in for a consultation who didn’t find what they were looking for with Custom Fitness. That’s okay. Everyone has unique needs and preferences on how they like to workout. No big deal. We cater to people’s needs the best we can, but if we don’t fit the bill, we don’t fit the bill. They will say “I like what you do, but I just want you to teach me what to do, so I can do it by myself. Can you do that?”
The answer is yes and no. In terms of working out, we’ve been led to believe that we can do everything on our own. American’s are huge on the DIY (Do It Yourself) movement. That’s why things like Pinterest are so popular.
Have you ever seen a Pinterest Fail, though? A person is so stoked to get their project off the ground. They purchase all the supplies and follow the instructions to the letter, but the result ends up looking nothing like the inspiration picture? I have done this (more than once). Often the process ended up being more stress than it was worth. Maybe it forced some blood, sweat, and tears out of them. What they could have done instead is to go talk with a professional. If you’re hoping to build some cabinets, go talk with a carpenter. If you’re wanting to create jewelry, go get some education from a jeweler. If you talk with an expert, they can do it better for you.
The thing that gets me, though, is that my job is my profession. It is not a hobby. My team didn’t wake up one morning thinking, “boy I’d sure love to smell some sweat today”. It is through our dedication to our studies (and multitude of earned certifications), our continuous research on up and coming evidence, and our commitment to our clients that we are engaged in the profession of fitness and nutrition. We are professionals in this field. My career in this industry now spans 18 years.
One thing I have learned in this life is everything you do will take either your money or your time. Depending on which you are willing to spend. Looking at health and wellness, someone can teach you how to do a lunge or a squat, but they cannot teach you an infallible way to put a program together and all of their knowledge in 2 or 3 days before you want to go off and DIY.
People don’t often realize that around the 4-6 week mark of working out, your progress will plateau. Your body is no longer seeing the workout as a challenge and needs a new stimulus in order to change. That stimulus needs to be more than the amount or reps or weight. You need an entirely different set up for the body can once again adapt to this new activity. When someone asks if they can just learn how to workout, it’s hard to say yes. It requires a lot of effort and time to learn. Most people aren’t willing to put that burden of years of investigating on themselves. I am frequently taking part in workshops and continuing education activities because it’s not something you can learn once and be done. The industry evolves as our access to research improves.
We have clients who come to see us one to four times per week. We have other clients who are on a maintenance program who do a great job working out by themselves at home, but they need the inspiration and expertise of a well-founded program to keep them from plateauing.
Training has many advantages. We keep people from hitting that plateau all the while providing motivation to keep going. We hold you accountable. You will continually change and reach new goals because your program was professionally designed by someone who knows what they are talking about instead of blindly following some challenge on Pinterest.
When we develop programs, we aren’t checking hashtags for the latest and greatest ab workouts. Nor are we scouring Youtube for leg day ideas. We are researching these exercises out ourselves. We analyzing the foundations of movements and apply them to patterns of movements. We stay abreast of new trends in the industry and seeing what is successful for our clients. That’s our job, everyday.
To answer the question, can we just teach you to workout so you can do it yourself? You can try, but results may vary. The workout you create on your own may not be as efficient and effective as one you would receive if working with a trainer who knows you. The progress might also not last a lifetime.
Why should you invest in a personal trainer? You are either going to spend your time and money on preventative healthcare like healthy food, training, stress management or you will spend it on medication and doctor’s visits. It’s as simple as that.
