Increasing your odds of success by 95% by doing just this one thing. That’s an intriguing intro to read, right? I know that I have your attention now. So we’re going to be talking about that “one thing”, and it can go either really good or really bad. It depends on how you use this.
So, to increase your odds of success by 95% you need to introduce a workout buddy, or a health buddy, to whatever program you are working. So if you’re working on nutrition, find a buddy that can work with you on that. If you are going to the gym and working out, find someone that wants to go with you and workout.
So where does the bad part come in? Well, that comes in when you choose the wrong buddy. If you choose someone that really doesn’t have the same end goals or intentions that you do, they aren’t likely to motivate you to get done what you need to.
I’m talking about the kind of buddy that will leave you waiting at the gym at 6am because they overslept. That’s not a good buddy.
I used to have a really good workout buddy that would go run with me at 5am. Ever since kids came, we don’t run that early. But when we would go run together at 5am, we would call each other first thing in the morning and make sure that the other person was up and ready to go. And I was always that person that was the pushy one. No matter how cold it was outside I was ready to go! But we always made sure that we pushed each other and we always got it done, and we ran consistently for about three years. We had a really great system going for us, and it helped us both out so much when it came to that consistency and accountability.
So what does the buddy system provide?
It provides accountability, and incentive. And those are the two big ones to reach that 95% increase. And along with that, your buddy will provide motivation.
On the accountability side, anytime that you are accountable to someone, then it just increases your odds of success of whatever goal you may have. That accountability may be something as little as a phone call once a week. It could be going to the gym with you. Maybe you just need to sit down and talk over coffee. You need to do whatever it is so that you know that you are accountable to that person. And typically when you have a workout buddy, and they’re meeting you at the gym, then you feel really motivated to get out of the house on time and not make them wait on you.
Another big thing is that your accountability doesn’t have to be outside of your home. That can come from your family. It can come from your spouse.
I love it when couples workout together because they can support each other at home. They can eat similar meals, they get into the rhythm of working out, and it turns into this really awesome thing. It good not just for their fitness but also for their relationship. They get to learn more about each other in a different way and also work together. And with some couples they like to workout together, and some like to do it separately and have the other person there for accountability. So you can find out what dynamic works best for you.
So, on the incentives side, having a workout buddy causes a few things. It causes you to work a little harder, you aren’t going to be slacking at the gym, and that’s because of that competitiveness. Everyone has at least a little bit of a competitive streak in them, and working out with someone will pull that out. So if you’re running a little bit faster than they are they’ll catch up. If their squat is deeper, you’ll go just as deep to catch up.
Being able to push each other a little bit is a big part of having that buddy. It’s not a one sided situation, the two of you are in this together. By pushing and encouraging each other, you’ll both see better results.
And part of what we do as personal trainers in amarillo is that we are that accountability. We are that accountability partner and we hold our clients accountable.
