Health and happiness does not have to be a myth. With a little intentional focus and some old fashioned determination, you can finally have what you’ve been looking for.

Number one, in order to reach health and happiness, we have to take time for what matters and as women, as moms, as busy people, we typically tend to not do that. So by taking time for what matters we’re talking about things like your family, your friends, your self, exercise, food or meal prep, taking care of you and those around you that you love. ‘Cause if you take time for what matters it’s going to start to make a huge difference and an impact in your level of health and happiness.

I had a client one time named Aubrey who came in telling me that she was high end executive and she was working 100 plus hours a week. She didn’t exercise, she wasn’t eating at home ever, she would eat out every meal. She had a strained marriage and she had some kids that she really loved but she never could be a part of their lives. So she had nannies to watch them and she just shuffled them from one place to the other.

And I’ll tell you that when she came to me she felt very down on herself. She was lost in this whole idea that health and happiness is really a myth. She was having some chronic issues health-wise and as we got to working together we not only were able to start to uncover kind of unpeel the onion, if you will, uncover in her eyes some issues that needed to be changed. But we were able to start making those changes.

Through our work together, we were able to start to implement more of a consistent exercise routine and more of a consistent food regimen. We brought in somebody who would help her with her meal planning those kinds of things and her husband started helping out in the kitchen and they were able to start eating better. And through that process over the course of several months she was able to start to reverse some of the symptoms that she was having. Some of those chronic conditions.

She also started to realize that nobody on their deathbed ever wishes that they had worked more, but rather that they’d spent more time doing the things that mattered to them with the people that mattered the most.

So through some intentional focus she was able to reduce her work schedule and really improve her life at home with her family and her husband as well. So it was quite the transition, if you will. And she took a long time to go through that. It’s not something that she could have changed overnight. It was something that took a lot of work to get there. But just someone that I always think of whenever it comes down to taking time for what matters.

The second step to your health and happiness is to take out what doesn’t matter. People don’t really think about that side so much. But sculptors, if you give a sculptor a rock or a piece of clay or whatever it is, they don’t typically add to it, they don’t go find more things to add to it, as much as they do start to chip away the pieces that don’t belong there or the pieces that aren’t necessary.

We need to be a little more diligent in our lives with doing that in our day to day operation. So one of the ways that we do that is by learning to say no to things or at the very least, asking the person, when they’re asking you if you can do something, to tell them let me pray or think on it. Give me the night, give me a couple of days and I’ll get back to you so that you’ve got time to look over your life schedule and see does this really fit in? Is this the right thing to do?

So for me as a business owner, I get a lot of opportunities day to day. And some of those opportunities are the perfect fit. Some of them feel like they’d be really great, but if I do them I realize that I’m gonna have to take my attention away from this other part that I really enjoy doing.

So in order to not take my attention away and my focus away from what I need to do, I have to say no to the thing that sounds great, really isn’t the best fit. Always have to measure against that. Is it the right fit for me? And that goes in all of our lives.

So just because something is this way now doesn’t mean it has to continue that way. Change is hard and it’s scary, but you can always change things and make it a little different. For example, my personal story, not too long ago I had to start making some changes in what I was doing in order to take time for what really mattered and to chip out what didn’t. And I started that by changing my work schedule so that I could be at home with my family in the evenings earlier and that was really important to me. It still is.

So I started that process and then that was okay, but then I started bringing work home with me. Whether it was on my phone or my tablet or just in my head and things like that. So I actually bought a separate charging station and I found a room in the house that I don’t typically go into, which is the laundry room like on a nightly basis I don’t go in there. And I put the charging station in the laundry room and that way whenever I walk in from work now, I walk straight back to the laundry room, put my phone back there, put my work bags back there. It signifies to me that the workday is over and it’s now time to engage and be present with my family.

It has made a life changing transition in our relationship and in what we’ve been able to do and accomplish and just the actual relationship that we can have together now. And it makes a huge difference in that.

So i’m going to end part one here. In part two we’re going to be talking more about health and happiness.
