Hi guys, Kris from Custom Fitness here, your Amarillo personal trainer. Today we’re going to be talking about what a Fit 3D Body Scan is and why you would want one. If you have any questions about today’s blog, then please give us a call at (806)-322-3188
So one of the biggest issues I hear about with sticking to a program is motivation. First, I have to tell you that where motivation is an emotion, which we can never guarantee will be there day to day, discipline is the mindset of accepting that it has to be done whether we want to or not. The word motivation is much like our desire for the scale to be our only determining factor of success. We just want it. To motivate clients, it takes a multifaceted approach. But we know that one really great way to find motivation is to see results…consistently. Am I right? When the scale goes down or the clothes fit better, it makes you want to continue. When they don’t seem to change or move in the wrong direction it causes frustration and usually brings an end to your endeavors.
The problem here is that when you let one small factor decide whether you will be motivated or not, it’s too easy to throw in the towel. Results are like a 100 piece puzzle. Sometimes you have the right piece to put the picture together and sometimes it’s the wrong one, but you won’t know until you place it in the puzzle with the 99 other pieces to find out.
Too many people start and stop programs waiting for their emotions to catch up to their desires. We start programs knowing that “man, I’m out of shape” or “wow, that didn’t used to be that hard”, but never really measuring our starting point in full. That leads to invisible progress because as you change, there’s no way to measure the amount of change to give you that feeling of success.
Most at home programs nowadays ask you to take your weight and pictures of yourself and those can be great tools but when you think about how the body works, they may not be the only tools you’ll need. Think of your body like a kitchen sponge. It starts out dry and weighs next to nothing but in order to do its job of cleaning the dishes, you’ll have to get it wet. Now, when it’s wet, it weighs much more than when it was dry even though nothing else has changed (shape, form, etc.). Over time…lots of time, it begins to change shape as it molds to the position it is used most frequently in. Stick with me here… So the human body is much the same.
In the beginning as we are watching our weight, really we are only seeing an exchange of liquids going into and out of the body. (keep in mind that we can fluctuate in weight from 4-10lbs daily) and yet we allow this more often than not to ruin our mentality. The liquids coming into and being temporarily stored within our body are being used to do the work of the body. Without stored water, our body will cease to function. Over time usually within 12 weeks, we can start to see some fantastic physical changes that weren’t there in the first month. But if you quit on week 3 or 4 because your weight kept coming back, you weren’t able to get to that point of physical reshaping.
So, how do we fix this problem? Start with an initial assessment of your current physique and health then continue to reassess every 2-4 weeks to ensure the changes that you are wanting are happening. You can do this with a tape measure, photos, weight at home or you could request the services of a professional to have a higher quality metric analysis done.
At Custom Fitness we start each client off with a comprehensive body scan. This is a 3D scan where your body is measured and evaluated for girth, body composition, posture, balance, caloric need, lean (muscle) and fat mass and more. This scanner is so precise that you could actually have clothing tailored to you from the measurements it takes. It also uses algorithms from the DEXA machine which is currently the “gold standard” when it comes to body fat percentage. Each client who is scanned receives an email from the system when the scan has been successfully completed leading them to their online profile page where they can then view the results of each scan and even compare any 2 scans that they have taken.
This body scan replaces many of the previous methods we’ve used like skinfold calipers (typically giving error ranges of 5-6%), tape measure girth measurements (affected by human error depending on how tight and exactly where you were measured) and more. We want to ensure that our clients are not only getting results but that they can see the results! Over time, the photos and clothes fitting differently will be a great form of assessment but in the beginning monitoring of body composition is much more motivating and helpful. From a professional’s side of things, we are unable to feel what you are feeling or to see what you are seeing (from your perspective) so the metric analysis from our Fit 3D scanner helps us to help our clients better. We re-do this scan every 4 weeks for our clients or more often when needed.
We offer this service to the public as well to help everyone who wants to have a clear picture of where they are starting from. While we normally charge non members a minimal fee for this scan, prospective members coming in for a consultation with us will receive one at no charge. This scanner has greatly changed the way our clients are able to view their results and has served as a great motivator in itself to help people stay on track with their programs.
No matter what you are doing or where you are starting from, having a metric analysis done prior to starting is a great way to be able to fully measure your success and to maintain your motivation. Whether this is a tape measure and scale or a higher technology, find the solution that makes the most sense for you and is easiest to track and get started.
