So I just want to know, has your favorite splurge become more habit than it has joy?

Every time that we take on a new client and go into that nutrition consult for the first time, people come in with more guilt to lay down on the table than I have information to give them. And the amount of guilt that comes in is sad. We put ourselves under so much pressure, and we know what to do but we don’t always get it done and then we feel guilty that we didn’t do it.

So whenever somebody sits down with us to coach us on nutrition, sometimes that can feel a little daunting for them. It can feel a little uneasy, and sometimes just frustrating. Because, again, we know what to do, but we haven’t quite done it. And then there are other cases where people aren’t quite sure what to do. They kind of have a general idea, but there is so much information out there that they don’t know where to even start.

So, one of the things that we sit down and talk about is their favorite splurges. What they normally enjoy eating, what they eat whenever they come home from a long day at work, or what they do to reward themselves for a great day. There are always things that start out as an every now and again thing-something that started out as a splurge and that has now turned into and everyday habit.

Some stuff that comes to mind are things like chocolate and alcohol. A lot of people come home from work and grab a handful of something with chocolate in it or grab a drink. So everyone has these vices that they cling to, and they become these habits that take place every day.

So whenever you start out just grabbing drinks with friends, and then it turns into a nightly affair where in order to unwind from the day you have to have a glass of whatever drink in your hand. It really starts to become that habit that you really don’t need. It’s adding extra calories into your day, unhealthy habits to your day, or it’s making you feel like you have to rely on something in order to live your life.

So habits like that can sometimes get in the way of reaching your ultimate goals. Whether that’s weight loss, muscle gain, or just living healthily.

Whenever you do something repeatedly not only does it become a habit on the outside where you’re always having that snack or drink in your hand, but it also becomes a problem on the inside. The body starts to retaliate against these things whenever you are eating or drinking the same thing every day. A lot of times, this is where people end up with food allergies as adults because they over consume the same things on a daily basis.

A lot of people in the Panhandle area actually have a dairy allergy whether they know it or not, and how severe it is depends on how often you consume it. Because we have so much dairy in everything that we consume, typically people will end up with a dairy allergy.

So what are your options here? We know that you have a problem; let’s say that you are one of those people that go home and have something with chocolate in it. You know that you have that problem, so what are you going to do to fix it?

Well, first knee jerk response is willpower. You think: No problem, I’ll just cut it out!  Give it a few days, that willpower will give out and you will eventually go back to that habit. So maybe that wasn’t the best option.

Then you think that if you aren’t going to have your chocolate, then you’ll replace it with something like soda or chips. The problem there is that it really isn’t your best bet because you haven’t addressed the situation. All you have done is replace one habit with another. And maybe it could be a healthier habit, but again if you over consume the same thing over and over again no matter how healthy it is, you could end up having the same problem internally. The body needs variety.

So if willpower isn’t an option, and replacement isn’t an option, then what is?

Well, first you have to understand the situation. What the situation is not only did you enjoy that substance of whatever it is that you’re eating or drinking, but you have to understand that you built a habit around that. And that habit is now not just a metal enjoyment, but physical thing.

You come home, you have this specific place that you sit, you have this specific routine that you go through, and if you don’t then your day doesn’t feel right. If you’re the person that comes home and eats, then maybe you feel like you’re starving all the time.

So there are a lot of different ways to work on this. From my standpoint as a personal trainer in Amarillo, when I’m coaching my clients privately, I customize a complete solution for them. We work through different habit changes and different goals each week so that we can work through these situations and address the issue, but also change the issue. This way the body is actually working towards their health goals instead of away from them. So we’re supporting the body in what we’re doing.
