This is going to be the first part in a two part series, so be on the lookout for part two coming soon. And if you have any questions about today’s blog, then please give us a call at (806)-322-3188
A day doesn’t go by for me without people coming in and discussing nutrition. I find that sometimes people don’t eat very well, and sometimes people are not doing so well. And the not so well is not what you would think a lot of times. Typically you would think about binging on ice cream, or eating nothing but fried food all weekend, not being well is really a lack in one of four areas. So I want to talk about those with you today and go over them. I want to give you a better idea on how you can support your body’s needs, and your goals through your eating.
Now, I understand that a lot of people see nutrition and think that it is so complicated. They don’t want to have to prep every meal, they think that they are going to have to weigh and measure everything, they feel like they are going to lose their social life because they can’t go out to eat anymore. And this really just is not true. Nutrition is really quite simple, and it’s very easy to balance out what you are doing, especially if you take it one small step at a time. Being overly critical of every calorie that you put into your mouth, or every bite that you take, is really frustrating and stressful. This can really cause people too, more often than not, derail rather than reaching their goals. So instead, as I said before, there are about four different areas that you need to watch for.
#1 Balance
Are you balanced? Are you balanced in your meals? What you need is protein, vegetables, healthy food, healthy fats, starchy carbs, but are you balancing those on your plate the way that you need to? You should be. You need to be sure that you have the correct portions of each, but also that you got them when you need them. Starchy carbs are one of those things that you definitely need in a sense of refueling.
#2 Refueling
With refueling, after a workout you need to be able to refuel yourself based on how hard you worked. If you don’t refuel, then you use up the stores within. That can be a good thing to a point, but eventually you run out of stores within the cells and you’ll need those starchy carbs.
So our bodies were physically meant to have those carbs. That doesn’t mean that we need them in the excess that we normally do, and that doesn’t mean that we need the types that we usually do. There are smart carbs. There are ones where they will be more beneficial and have a higher nutrient profile. So if you look at the difference between a sweet potato and a piece of bread, then the nutrition difference is pretty big.
So you want to remember that there are a lot of things that you are going to need, and you have to find the right balance for those things. Also, a lot of people feel like when they don’t workout they can’t have any of those carbs. But it’s important to think in a positive manner and realize when you do workout you do need those carbs. And you want to make sure that you time those carbs appropriately.
#3 Timing
You want to make sure that you time your meals appropriately. I have some people come in that eat once a day and others that eat nine or ten times a day. You want to find not only the right timing for your body, but also the right timing for your mind. It’s important to find out what works best for you.
Now a lot of people are grazing throughout the day. Those are the nine to ten times a day people. They are constantly walking by and grabbing something to snack on. Typically those people take in more calories during the day then someone that times their meals and eats at specific meal times. Now the other people that eat only once or twice a day typically aren’t getting enough nutrition to their body. They tend to store more fat and burn more muscle because their body doesn’t know the next time that it’s going to eat.
The other fact is that if you are only eating once or twice a day, and you are eating not the best foods for you, you’re not balancing your foods, you’re not getting all of the nutrient profile that you need from an entire day’s worth, then you’re going to be underfed. That is going to lead to a fat increase as well. Because even when you’re underfed, again the body is going to hold on to fat rather than your muscle, so it’s going to start to let that go. Your muscle helps to burn fat, so you really need your muscle. And your muscle is also what helps you when you start to lose weight, to help you not look like you’ve been ill. You’ll be able to have that muscle tone to help the body to maintain where it’s at.
