So last time we were talking about how diabetes affects people. This time we are going to be talking about the other things that could possibly accompany a disease like this, and ways to turn this around.
So if the last post didn’t quite drive the point home, here is the next thing to be on the lookout for: a condition like diabetes typically acts like a stair step up to other conditions. High blood pressure, high cholesterol, high triglycerides… there are so many things that it could be. And it’s not that diabetes causes those conditions, but rather the lifestyle that got you to the point that you’re at with the diabetes will typically take you to other places that you don’t want to go either. So now instead of just the $300,000 that you were looking at over a lifetime, now you have the added expenses of more medication and more doctor visits.
Let’s take a step back for a moment into the current moment. So what you you do today to avoid, or severely limit, this issue?
The truth is, that most people aren’t willing to spend more than $50 a month on their own personal health. A gym membership is usually where it stops. And as human nature goes, they eat whatever they want to, rather than eat what their body physically needs for just about every meal.
It’s obvious to most what should be done, so let’s change the paradigm here and think beyond just a workout, or paying for a gym, or a crash diet. Let’s think about the options.
Option 1 is to purchase a cheap gym membership, go not even half as often as you should, fumble through what you think might be an okay workout, and try to change your eating habits but you’re burnt out from trying crash diets so it’s not really doing much. What does this cost: about $50 a month. Did you benefit: um, not really sure. Did your health change for the better: probably not. If it did would you be able to maintain it: maybe?
Option 2 is to enlist the assistance of a professional training team, get 4-5 very effective and efficient workouts each week, receive a customized nutrition plan that is sustainable, start being held accountable to be sure that this plan sticks, and actually find a plan that not only works but makes sense! Total cost: $250 a month. Did you benefit: clearly. Did your health change for the better: definitely. Will you be able to maintain it: without question, because you have the accountability, the support, and the education. There is definitely a price tag difference, but there is also a difference in benefit. Your health is the #1 asset that you have. If you don’t work to take care of your health, you won’t have it for long and then the medical costs are going to take over.
Now for that price difference, let’s compare our 40 year old diabetic’s cost of maintaining their health to the person that took on the training team. So with diabetes they are spending approximately $300,000 over a lifetime to provide medical help to the condition which they have. That comes out to $7,895 a year, that’s $658 a month. Compare that to our $248 a month person that went with the training, and you are saving almost two thirds of the cost of the diabetic and you have your health as well which is priceless.
So, yes, taking charge of your health and fitness can cost you more than $10-50 a month. However, if you look at it from a health perspective rather than from a vanity perspective, then it starts to make a lot more sense. This is why people are willing to spend that extra money.
So my question for you today is this: if you had to make your own health and fitness a part of your budget how much would you invest? So if you are ready to come down off of that fence of the ‘should I?’ and ‘should I not?’, then give us a call. You can have a sit down conversation with someone and ask them all of the questions that have been on your mind for years.
