Hi guys, Kris from Custom Fitness here, your Amarillo personal trainer. Today we’re going to be wrapping up the two part series on 5 common misconceptions about nutrition. Now be sure to read part one if you haven’t already at the link here: And as always, if you have any questions about today’s blog then please give us a call at (806)-322-3188
So last time we were talking about the first three misconceptions about nutrition, so now let’s move on to number four: the misconception that it all has to be raw. I hear this a lot. “Can I cook that? Am I supposed to have it all raw? That’s really gross. I can’t handle that.” Well, you know, some people like raw, some people don’t. That’s fine. My job is to get you to eat healthier, not to perfect everything to a T. So if I can get you to eat better, maybe for you that’s having some cooked vegetables.
Maybe for you that’s having something just a little step up instead of switching the whole diet plan around to where your nutrition is flipped from one side to the other. So, it does not always have to be raw. It has to be whatever you are willing to eat. That’s the goal first.
So if you don’t normally eat … I like to use vegetables as an example because so many people don’t eat enough of them. But if you don’t typically eat vegetables, then telling you they have to be raw whenever you hate that isn’t going to help any. But telling you that you can add them into a casserole dish or into some soup, you might start doing that. Might kind of have some places where you think, “Well, I don’t really love this, but I can do this” and that’s what we need. We need that doable place.
Number five is “I don’t like shakes. I don’t like pills.” Well, you know what, this day and age, everything is a shake and pill, isn’t it? We have turned this whole world of nutrition into shakes and pills, and we’ve taken supplements from their rightful place of filling in gaps in our diet to being our diet, which is a problem because they can’t be utilized by the body in the exact same way some foods can. And foods offer so much more to them and with them than what we can get from these shakes and pills.
Now, I’m not saying that you can’t ever do them. That’s great if that’s your thing. Not a problem. But, you can get a lot of benefit from food too, so my suggestion is that to better, we would eat real food first and then if we’re missing something, that’s where we add in a little bit of a supplement for it, which is originally what those were created for in the first place.
So really, it’s come out of our need of just constant grab and go. We’re always on the move, we’re always busy, and I get it. I’m a mom of two, I’ve got a business to run, there’s always something going on, trust me. I rarely have those days where I just get to sit down and be like, “Man, I have nothing to do right now.” Very rare.
But, if we need a shake every now and then, that’s fine. But if you can eat food, do it. Make sure that you get in the food that God gave us. He gave us a plethora of nutrients through all this nutrition that He left here for us, so we should use it to the best of our abilities. Plus, it’s been shown through research recently, that the more often that we’re consuming a plant-based diet, the more likely our body is to be able to heal itself.
It’s amazing what’s coming out in the research with that. But our bodies are being able to heal themselves because we’re giving them the nutrition that they need in order to do that. We have not seen that with the onslaught of supplement companies and the onslaught of calorie restriction or macro nutrient restriction or things like that.
But what we have seen that with is incorporating more of a plant-based diet … I did not just tell you that you had to be vegan or vegetarian, but just incorporating more of a plant-based diet in what you’re doing to kind of change things up a little bit. That’s where the popularity of the Meatless Mondays have come in so much. Give it a try! You just might like it.
That is going to wrap up our series on 5 common misconceptions about nutrition. Now I hope that you all learned something that will benefit you. Nutrition doesn’t have to be horrible and scary, just take it one step at a time. It doesn’t have to be horribly strict, it doesn’t have to be perfect, it doesn’t have to come in pretty packaging or be endorsed by a celebrity. Nutrition is simpler than a lot of people think, and I hope that today you felt a little less scared about the big bad nutrition world (psst, it’s not that bad).
