So just in case you’re new to this whole world DIY is do it yourself, and we live in a world of DIY these days. Everything from hair to waxing to crafting scary enough even into plumbing and construction and even electrical.
I have a friend who’s a contractor who said that he’s got a client right now he’s been watching this 30 minute show about basically rebuilding your house and there’s a dozen of them on there at least. They hired him to remodel their house and they’ve been standing over him, right over his shoulder, telling him exactly what they think he should do, because they’ve been watching this show that said that they need to do this. He said, to put it nicely, that it was driving him nuts.
On the plumbing side, I have another friend who’s a plumber who said that it basically if done incorrectly, so if you know what you’re doing great, but if you try to DIY your plumbing it’s basically going to double your bill whenever you have to call the plumbers out.
So there’re certain times a DIY really makes sense. A while back whenever one of my kiddos was really little, I decided that she needed a petticoat skirt. One of those big fluffy skirts and everything. So I get online try and find one, it’s like a 100 bucks for this thing. I thought, “That’s ridiculous. I know how to sew.” So I go and buy the materials and for $25 and quite a few hours I had an awesome skirt. Now, for me, it was worth it, because the time did not outweigh the cost.
Remember that everything that we do in life is either going to take your time or it’s going to take your money. Depends on which one you have available, or you would like to use, obviously. But, there are certain times that if you don’t have the money, it’s quite dangerous to try and do it yourself. The electrical, for instances, might not be your best bet, if you don’t know anything about electrical.
There’s a ton of YouTube videos out there. There’s all these resources where you can get things and you can do it all yourself. Some you do once, you may never want to do it again. I had a friend of mine tried to change the oil in their car when they had never done that before, and it was one of those cars that you had to have special tools and all those kinds of things. By the end of it they decided that they would just take it in next time and let the shop do that for them. Sometimes you vow never to do it again, but sometimes you try it and you think, “That’s not too bad,” like the the skirt idea.
Just depends on you, your personality and what the situation is. The thing is I’ve had so many people come in this week that brought this to mind, because they walk in here and people are almost depressed that they have to ask for help. I’m not sure where that happened. We always joke about how men have a hard time asking for directions and asking for help and things like that, to a point we know that, that’s true, but really this has been conditioned in all of us that when it comes to our health, when it comes to our nutrition, to our exercise, just to our way of life, we should have that in a bag. We should know exactly how to do that, without any help. We should never have to ask and we should be able to do it on our own.
It’s accountability, motivation, programming, whatever it may be. The problem is that we have this whole world of infobesity. We’ve got other blogs on that if you want to look at those, but the infobesity is where you’ve got so much conflicting information, well just so much information in general, but it’s all conflicting, right? So you can look up anything online, “Is this good for me? Yes.” “Is this bad for me? Yes,” and you won’t know which way to turn a lot of times.
So in this conditioning that we’ve been led through, to believe that this is all on us, it’s all our responsibility, gets kind of heavy. It weighs us down. Health and fitness does not have to be a DIY situation and I think that some place, say Planet Fitness or Crunch or some of the other big box gyms can prove that, because how many people do you know that are walking around with these decorative key tags on their key chain, right? And that’s really what they are, is decorative at this point, because they haven’t gone in how long? Or because they do go and they don’t ever change. They still complain about needing to lose weight, or needing to build muscle tone. They just don’t know what to do.
And the problem is that the big box gyms will rent you equipment, but they don’t give you a plan. They have no further need to communicate with you outside of, “Please pay your membership. Thank you for your payment.” So instead of expecting ourselves to know all these things, we need to look at kind of what it is that we’re missing out of that situation. I mean there’s so many resources. They’re so many options. They’re so many parts. They’re so many paths. We have to not only find the right one for us, we have to find the one that’s going to work and that’s going last and most of all is it safe, because a lot of times people are going into these situations and they’re not in a safe situation for their body or where they need to be at the time.
They don’t really know how to strengthen their body in the way that they need to, or how to make themselves healthier, but they follow the advice of people that perhaps are not as credible as others, and they start to experiment with things that maybe aren’t that safe for them, so it’s important to look at that.
How much will you spend on these DIY situations before you figure out that the so called answer isn’t really worth your time or your health? Now, I’m not saying that DIY is bad, I do plenty of that and as I mentioned before there’s a lot of times that I’ll do experimental purchasing of different programs and things like that to make sure of what clients are buying and see what’s new, what’s going on in the world so I can make sure that I can keep up with the times, if you will.
But, whenever you’re spending money on that stuff, it adds up really quick. A lot of times those electronic programs, especially they just go on to your hard drive and then you forget about them. The Apps that you have, you might use them once or twice a month and you really don’t think about it, because it’s only what 10, $15 bucks a month? But, it still adds up over time. It’s things that constantly are being, billed but you’re not constantly getting results from.
