So you may have found yourself asking Why isn’t this thing that I used to do working for me now? As we get older, there are a lot of times where the things that we used to do don’t work the same way.

So when you think about it, from birth we are taught to be active. Your parents get so excited when you learn how to crawl, walk, run and all of those things. I know that when I was a kid I would always be told to go outside and find something active to do. And also as kids we get directed to get into a sport of some kind.

And so what happens at that point. Well, when we get to elementary school we’re given physical education daily. There’s really no way to get out of it. I worked out outside of school in all of my extracurriculars and I still had to do gym. So there is a lot of times that we are almost being forced into physical activity as a kid.

Once we get to junior high and high school, you might get into athletics. Either way there is still required physical education and you still are being told to get out and do something. So for the most part, it’s just a way of life. You may or may not like it, but it’s just what you have to do. It’s a part of life.

Then college comes. And what happens in college? Very few people that do athletics in high school end up continuing that into college.

The ones that stop athletics in college may start to feel this unmeasurable level of freedom now. No one is going to tell them what to do, how to do it, and no one is going to hold them accountable. And these days in college there isn’t typically a physical education credit that they need. In my world that’s a little bit sad, but it’s just the way the world works. And I understand that if physical education isn’t in someone’s degree plan, they aren’t going to spend the extra money to take a physical education class.

So, we have these people that were told their whole lives what to do and how to do it. They were trained in a sport, maybe volleyball or basketball, whatever it may be. Now they are in college and they have this freedom. So obviously they are going to take some time off and don’t do anything. And as they take that time off and progress through that, they find themselves getting out of shape. They get uncomfortable with how they look and how they feel. This could happen a years down the road, ten years, a few months, it all depends. So now they start to try and revamp themselves. And all they know is that they used to play whatever sport it is that they played, they know how they trained for that and that is what they try to do now.

The problem is that they don’t play those sports now, so that training doesn’t affect them the same way. So they get back into it and their body doesn’t respond in the same way that it used to. They don’t feel like they’re getting back into the same shape that they were in during high school. They can’t quite find that balance anymore.

This same thing happens a lot with people that are ex-military. They have spent so much of their lives being told exactly what to do and how to do it, and having a group of people that are dependent on you having that thing done. In the military it isn’t just asked of you to be accountable, it’s required. It’s a way of life, until they get out. And so a lot of times with people that have been out can maintain it for awhile, but eventually it kind of breaks. It becomes a lot harder to hold yourself accountable without having anyone else to help you.

I know that we were on a great roll, but I’m going to end the first part here. I’m sorry to leave you guys hanging but we are going to get back into it during part two of this series.
