Hi guys, Kris from Custom Fitness here, your Amarillo personal trainer. Today we’re going to be talking about making a shift in your life. If you have any questions, please give us a call at (806) 322-3188

Now, if we’re being honest, you all sat around this past weekend and watched infomercials about the latest and greatest in workouts, the new fitness devices, and the best frozen food that they ship to your house and how you can lose a gazillion pounds in just two weeks. It’s a pretty silly right?

I know a lot of the time you don’t want to be watching these things, but you do just because it’s what’s on TV. And usually with all of the channels we have on TV these days, it’s not often that we see those things. But it’s January. January seems to bring something out in you where you are just looking for this fix. You’re tired of being where you’re at, and you’re ready to lose weight.

So perhaps today, you should take a moment to ask yourself: Am I thinking in the right direction?, and see if there is a shift that is needed mentally in order to get to where you need to be.

So what’s the problem? You want to lose weight, you want to feel better, have more energy, and just overall be healthier. Well, the problem falls in the fact that it’s always about weight. No matter what the problem is, you can always find a way to bring it back to your weight.

Now, there can be some truth to that, but the stuff that the infomercials tell you about fitness and weight loss are lies. They are lying to you. These programs are not meant for every single person, they are meant for a very small, select group of people. It may or may not work for you. It might work for you for a moment and then plateau off. You may have experience with losing great amounts of weight and then gaining it all back, so what was the point in doing that?

So instead of focusing on losing weight and trying out the newest, shiniest object, take a step back and find a plan that is actually going to shift your focus from your weight to your health. Let your plan be something that is going to work for you not only the first time, but long term.

As a personal trainer in Amarillo, my biggest pet peeve is when I help people and then watch them regress back and have to start over again. Same thing when I’m working as a health coach. I see people going forward in their nutrition and lifestyle modifications and then they just end up regressing back.

So I had to quickly learn how to help people avoid that regression, and that has really become my focus over the past seventeen years. I don’t want anyone to have to deal with that, and I don’t want you to have to do that. I want you to go forward with better health, better physique, better energy, and to be able to maintain that for a lifetime.

So shifting your focus to your health rather than your weight is the beginning point. If you’re focused just on weight, then when you lose it your brain thinks it’s party time, and that you can just go back to what you were doing before. You think now that the weight is off, you can go treat yourself to whatever it was you liked to eat before you lost the weight. You may think that it’s not a problem, but it is because it’s the beginning of regression.

So instead of putting all the focus on the outcome goal, focus on enhancing your health and becoming and feeling better and you’ll start to have this long term longevity with what it is that you have done.

So with weight, scales can be inaccurate, not calibrated, or just be downright depressing. Sometimes it’s really just a depressing way to start your day. You know that overnight you didn’t lose any weight, but you still step on the scale and get disappointed. All that does is put you in a negative mindset and discourage you from continuing to try and make changes.

So just don’t weigh yourself often unless you know that what you’re doing is the right plan and that it’s going to take you to where you need to be. Instead maybe try some clothes on every once in awhile and take a picture. This way you’ll have a more accurate representation of where you are in your journey.

I also want you to know that as you’re losing weight, you may be wanting to restrict calories. Restricting calories restricts nutrition, which restricts your health, and that can could cause you to diet yourself into disease. So by building muscle mass and fueling your body with food, you might end up maintaining your weight. You may not lose anything, at least not as fast as you want to because you need that muscle to build up your metabolism. Instead, you’ll be filling your body with the right foods, and build your muscle mass by exercising, and that will cause you to actually lose inches and really transform your body.

So if you think about it like this; your weight, no one else on earth knows that number, and the doctors can’t remember. You can walk into a room full of 130lb people and all of their bodies will look different. So you have to remember that no one knows that number. That number has nothing to do with how people perceive you. And to a point, that’s what a lot of people are looking for is that perception to be changed.

So if you’re looking for a different perception, adding in some muscle toning exercises, resistance training, essentially getting your body to work to where you build that muscle tone is going to start to reshape you. This is where you start to lose inches and your clothes start to fit better. This is when people are starting to ask if you’ve been working out, and you look different because you’ve changed your body.

So that’s a huge thing to consider; maybe by switching your mindset you can put your focus into efforts that are actually going to be beneficial to changing your outward physique while you’re enhancing your health. And really overall, people are missing that big picture whenever it comes to the January (I’m hesitant to say resolution) idea of jumping in.

Don’t miss out on the big picture. Know that health should be more of a focus than losing weight. Excess fat and excess weight are typically a sign of something not working totally right internally. It could be over consumption, but a lot of the time you’re  carrying around this excess because the body is kind of gunked up- the systems aren’t working quite as well. If you can clear that out and get the systems to work well, it can process and burn that off. You add in some exercise and healthy eating, the body can do amazing things with that.

But, you don’t want to diet yourself into disease. A lot of those people that are restricting those calories end up taking in less and less nutrition and end up in a lot of trouble later on. They start to wonder why their hormones are so off, or why menopause is so bad, or why they have high blood pressure and high blood sugar. This is because they restricted their calories so much that their body can no longer function at an elite level.

So remember that losing weight isn’t worth it unless you’re focusing on your health first.
