Do you ever notice how easy it is to create an excuse for something that you don’t want to do?

Now, to follow up on that, I’m going to talk to you today about excuses. This kind of goes along with procrastination except that it almost has a different twist to it.
So, long ago I worked at Amarillo College for about thirteen years. When I was there I noticed that a lot of people would have the excuse of, “Well, I would go to the gym, but the parking is horrendous. It takes me five minutes to walk in from the parking lot.” Keep in mind that they were coming to workout. So they were worried about getting in too much walking before coming in to warm up and work out.
Not to judge, but it caused an excuse for someone to not want to come in and workout.
I also had a client at one time that would circle the block three or four times to find a close enough parking space. If she didn’t find one next to the gym, she wouldn’t come in. She would just call in and cancel the session, which wasn’t too much fun for anyone.
So before we were blessed with this wonderful brick and mortar studio, I had times that I worked out of a church- several churches, actually. And churches can be big. The one that I was working out of had three different buildings to it, it had different floors in each building, and so I would tell people exactly where we would be working at. And I would have people drive up to this big building and get anxious about where they needed to be. So they wouldn’t stop driving, and they wouldn’t come in unless i came out to the door and personally walked them in. And if you know me at all, that’s who I am. I try to make sure that I take away people’s excuses.
So once I found out that was the problem, I would go stand outside and wait for the people and walk them in. Or I would meet them in the back of the park by the college and we’d do part of their workout on the way to the building.
There’s always a way to get things done, it’s just a matter of if you’re thinking outside of the box to do that.
So, what are your excuses? Is it that the new year has come and you feel so spread thin that you can’t take a moment for yourself? Or is it that you have kids going in a million different directions? Whatever your excuse is, you have to stop and take a minute and really think outside of the box. You may have to look at it from someone else’s perspective or ask for someone else’s help to look at your situation and ask where they see a gap of time. Your gap can be for working out, or food prep, or just taking five minutes to breathe.
So it’s good to take a step back, get out of the box, and think about how you can do the things that you need to do.
I want to tell you a little bit today about what we do here at Custom Fitness and what I do as a Personal Trainer in Amarillo. Maybe it will give you some ideas for what you can do, or this could be the information that you need to get started with us or someone like us to help with accountability.
How do we keep our clients and get rid of those excuses? Well first we keep them accountable. We check in on them and make sure that their workouts are going well, and that they’re getting in everything that they need to get in. If they aren’t, then you have that support person, and they will sit down with you and create a plan. We recreate something new that fits in with their current life issues that they’re having, that are causing them to be as healthy and fit as they would like to be.
So that’s number one. Number two is we have clients going in and out of town and have so much going on that they can’t find an hour each day to workout. That’s fine, most of our workouts are closer to thirty minutes. But sometimes it’s hard to find even thirty minutes to get it in. And if that’s the case, we write custom programs for those clients to make sure that they’ve got maybe only two to five exercises to get done. It takes about about ten minutes max and they’re finished. Is that going to get them in the best shape of their lives? No, but it is going to help them maintain the results they’ve already obtained, and raise their metabolism.
For example, if you do two to five exercises before you go and overload on food on while traveling or just on your day off, it won’t keep you from gaining everything, but it will help to boost your metabolism to help you burn off some of that fat faster. This way, you won’t be as likely to store as much of the fat as you’re consuming.
Another way that we keep clients accountable is that we make sure that we make sure that they can do their workouts with or without equipment. This way if all you have is your body and a yoga mat space, you can get a workout in.
We also offer virtual sessions. You can do it over skype or facetime (really anyway that we can virtually see each other), so that way if you’re stuck at home waiting for cable guy or anything like that, you can still get a workout in that day.
And flexibility is important. Sometimes everything breaks loose and going to get a workout that day isn’t possible, but you can at least still take ten minutes out of your evening at home and get a workout in.
At Custom Fitness our trainers all work as a team so we’re able to flexibly schedule anyone from 5am to 8:30pm, it’s easy for us to work with our clients when something comes up.
I hope that this gave you some ideas to put towards your life. As we’re going into the new year, everyone has these “resolutions” and I hate that word. Resolutions are something that we make and break, instead of just taking the action to really commit to better health and fitness.
As you’re thinking about that, start to really hone in on those excuses that you might have, even if you haven’t thought of them yet. What might come up? What could come up? Prepare for those situations, so that if they come up you have a plan.
